Motor planning brings human primary somatosensory cortex into action-specific preparatory states

Giacomo Ariani et al.

Summary: Motor planning is crucial for producing fast and accurate movement. However, the neural processes in the primary motor and somatosensory cortex during planning and execution are still poorly understood. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the planning and execution of single finger movements, revealing finger-specific activity patterns in both the primary somatosensory cortex and primary motor cortex. These findings suggest that motor planning activates specific circuits in the somatosensory and motor cortex, which are also engaged during movement execution.

THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING BEHIND SENSITIZED BRAIN-CONTROLLED BIONIC HANDS

Chethan Pandarinath et al.

Summary: Advances in brain function understanding and neural interfaces have made brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) possible, which can reanimate limbs and restore touch through monitoring and activation of neurons. This review discusses motor control and somatosensation mechanisms and describes different signal sources and methods.

Beyond body maps: Information content of specific body parts is distributed across the somatosensory homunculus

Dollyane Muret et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the information content in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is more distributed than the selectivity of body parts suggests. Using fMRI analysis, the researchers found significant differences in body part representation not only within the primary region but also in distant non-primary regions. This finding has implications for rehabilitation and brain-machine interfaces.

Malleability of the cortical hand map following a finger nerve block

Daan B. Wesselink et al.

Summary: This study investigates remapping in the brain map after finger amputation using pharmacological and neuroimaging methods. The findings reveal persistent representation of missing fingers in the brain map even decades after amputation. The study also shows that the blocked finger representation remains despite input loss.

The Neurophysiological Representation of Imagined Somatosensory Percepts in Human Cortex

Luke Bashford et al.

Summary: This study investigated how specific sensations are represented in different cortical regions during a somatosensory imagery task using intracortically recorded neural signals. It was found that the sensorimotor cortices encoded imagined sensations only during the imagery task, while the posterior parietal cortex began encoding sensations from cue presentation. The stable features of neural signals across the sensory network could inform future work on precisely eliciting specific sensations via ICMS.

Finger somatotopy is preserved after tetraplegia but deteriorates over time

Sanne Kikkert et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that somatotopic hand representations can be activated through attempted finger movements despite the absence of sensory and motor hand functioning and no spared spinal tissue bridges. This finding suggests that targeting hand representations is more effective within the first years after spinal cord injury, before deterioration occurs.

Approach of visual stimuli facilitates the prediction of tactile events and suppresses beta band oscillations around the primary somatosensory area

Tsukasa Kimura

Summary: The study investigated whether visual stimuli approaching influences prediction of subsequent tactile events, finding that the approach of visual stimuli facilitates prediction itself. Analysis of EEG showed that in the approach condition, beta band ERD was larger than in the neutral condition.

The role of somatosensation in automatic visuo-motor control: a comparison of congenital and acquired sensory loss

R. Chris Miall et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that regaining some motor control after adult-onset loss of proprioceptive and touch input heavily depends on cognitive control. By contrasting the performance of IW and KS, it is suggested that KS may have some advantage in automating simple visually-guided actions. In contrast, IW is unable to achieve this level of automation. The dual task of writing and drawing performed with and without an audio-verbal echoing task showed differences in visuo-motor performance between the two individuals.

Human Somatosensory Cortex Is Modulated during Motor Planning

Daniel J. Gale et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that motor planning not only prepares the motor system for movement, but also changes the neural state of the somatosensory system, allowing it to anticipate the sensory information received during movement.
