Plasmodium Ape1 is a multifunctional enzyme in mitochondrial base excision repair and is required for efficient transition from liver to blood stage infection

Neetu Verma et al.

Summary: This study explores the DNA repair mechanisms and enzyme functions in the mitochondria of the malaria parasite. The multifunctional activities of PfApe1 suggest a wider functional role in repair and cleavage processes. Experimental results on parasite fitness and infectivity indicate that knockout of the Ape1 gene causes a delay in the early parasitic stage.
