Mortality from various diseases of the circulatory system in the Russian Mayak nuclear worker cohort: 1948-2018

Summary: This study investigated mortality from diseases of the circulatory system (DCS) in Russian nuclear workers and found no significant associations between mortality and gamma-ray exposure or internal exposure to plutonium. However, a significant association was observed between gamma-ray exposure and mortality from ischemic stroke in male workers in the subcohort. Positive associations were also found between internal exposure and mortality from DCS and ischemic heart disease (IHD) in women.

The exposed patients were younger, had higher rates of diseases, and higher stroke lethality compared to the unexposed population.

Summary: This study reports the incidence risks for cerebrovascular diseases and strokes in a cohort of Russian nuclear workers chronically exposed to ionizing radiation. The findings suggest a significant association between cumulative radiation dose and CeVD incidence, but no significant association with stroke or its types.

Summary: Exposure to ionizing radiation can harm the cerebrovascular system, but the effects of chronic low-dose radiation exposure, such as that experienced by the public and occupationally exposed individuals, are uncertain. This study used data from the UK National Registry for Radiation Workers to investigate the association between low-dose external radiation exposure and cerebrovascular disease mortality.

Mortality among workers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, 1943-2017

Summary: The study analyzed the mortality experience of 26,328 workers first employed at Los Alamos National Laboratory between 1943 and 1980, with majority being hired before 1960. Most workers had a college degree, and a significant percentage were female, white, and Hispanic. The study found little evidence of radiation increasing the risk of lung cancer or leukemia, but esophageal cancer was associated with radiation and plutonium intakes were linked to an increase in bone cancer. Non-radiation related health issues were also observed among Hispanic workers.

Summary: This review explores the omics studies on radiation-induced cardiovascular disease (CVD) over the past 20 years and their applicability to the proposed adverse outcome pathway for CVD. The results show promising omics data in providing information for key events of CVD, such as oxidative stress, alterations of energy metabolism, extracellular matrix, and vascular remodeling.

CT organ dose calculator size adaptive for pediatric and adult patients

Summary: This study focuses on the calculation of organ doses for pediatric and adult patients with different body sizes in CT scans. By using a library of computational human phantoms and a radiation transport code, organ dose coefficients normalized to CTDIvol were calculated. The study found that using reference size phantoms only for dose calculation leads to overestimation of dose, and the upgraded dose calculator can reduce this dosimetric error.

Non-cancer disease prevalence and association with occupational radiation exposure among Korean radiation workers

Summary: This study aimed to investigate non-cancer disease prevalence among Korean radiation workers, finding higher rates of hyperlipidemia, thyroid diseases, and hepatitis compared to the general population. The study also showed that radiation doses were associated with increased prevalence of most diseases, but these associations were not significant after adjusting for confounders, except for musculoskeletal system diseases and cataracts. Further research is needed to explore the causality of non-cancer diseases involving various confounding factors like physical and psychosocial stresses and ultraviolet light.

Vascular Damage in the Aorta of Wild-Type Mice Exposed to Ionizing Radiation: Sparing and Enhancing Effects of Dose Protraction

Summary: Analysis of wild-type mice after receiving acute, intermittent, or continuous irradiation with 5 Gy of photons showed little impact on left ventricular function, heart weight, and kidney weight. Acute exposure resulted in structural disorganizations in the aorta, with changes in markers for profibrosis, fibrosis, proinflammation, and macrophages. The magnitude of aortic changes varied with the delivery mode of the radiation, suggesting dose protraction alters vascular damage.
