Induced demand in kidney replacement therapy

Steef Redeker et al.

Summary: There are three notable aspects of the current kidney replacement therapy program: a substantial decrease in home dialysis patients, a stabilized transplantation rate, and variation in referral rate among hospitals. These trends are influenced by the overutilization of in-center dialysis and the control of kidney replacement therapy demand by suppliers. The current healthcare policy leads to the overutilization of in-center dialysis, resulting in suboptimal care for patients and excessive healthcare expenditures. Policymakers should address this issue by reducing dialysis capacity and increasing transplantation facilities capacity.
