Monitoring Spinal Cord Tissue Oxygen in Patients With Acute, Severe Traumatic Spinal Cord Injuries

Ravindran Visagan et al.

Summary: This study examines the feasibility of monitoring tissue oxygen tension in patients with acute, severe traumatic spinal cord injuries. The results show that tissue oxygen tension is influenced by various factors, including intraspinal pressure, spinal cord perfusion pressure, tissue glucose levels, lactate/pyruvate ratio, and fever. In patients with motor-incomplete injuries, fluctuations in tissue oxygen tension correlate with fluctuations in limb motor score.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of association of prophylactic cerebrospinal fluid drainage in preventing spinal cord ischemia after thoracic endovascular aortic repair

Zhihui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of prophylactic cerebrospinal fluid drainage (CSFD) vs non-CSFD in preventing spinal cord ischemia (SCI) after thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for aneurysm and dissection. The systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that routine prophylactic CSFD was associated with a lower rate of postoperative SCI after TEVAR for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) compared to selective CSFD.

A systematic review of spinal cord ischemia prevention and management after open and endovascular aortic repair

Srihari K. Lella et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the rates of SCI and strategies for prevention and mitigation during DTA and TAA repairs. A multimodal approach, including institutional protocols, staging of repairs, preservation of collateral blood flow, augmented spinal cord perfusion, selective cerebrospinal fluid drainage, and distal aortic perfusion during open TAA repairs, was found to be important in reducing the risk of SCI.

Current Knowledge on Spinal Meningiomas Epidemiology, Tumor Characteristics and Non-Surgical Treatment Options: A Systematic Review and Pooled Analysis (Part 1)

Victor Gabriel El-Hajj et al.

Summary: Spinal meningiomas are the most common primary intradural spinal tumors in adults, with most patients being elderly females with WHO grade 1 tumors. Sensory and motor dysfunction, as well as pain, were the most common presenting symptoms. Despite some promising results, the benefits of non-surgical treatments remain controversial.

Current Knowledge on Spinal Meningiomas-Surgical Treatment, Complications, and Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (Part 2)

Victor Gabriel El-Hajj et al.

Summary: Spinal meningiomas are the most common primary intradural spinal tumors in adults. Surgery is a safe and effective treatment option, but poor preoperative status, longer time to surgery, and tumor recurrence can negatively impact outcomes. Higher WHO grade, higher Simpson grade, ventral tumor location, and male sex are associated with increased odds of recurrence. Surgery leads to significant improvements in health-related quality of life for patients.

Extended Reality in Neurosurgical Education: A Systematic Review

Alessandro Iop et al.

Summary: Surgical simulation practices using extended reality (XR) technologies have rapidly expanded and proven to enhance neurosurgical education. A systematic review of 31 studies showed solid results, particularly in improving young residents' performance. This review not only enhances understanding of XR in neurosurgical education but also provides valuable insights for future applications.

Spontaneous spinal cord infarction in Austria: a two-center comparative study

Slaven Pikija et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed spontaneous spinal cord infarction (SCI) patients in two tertiary care centers in Austria, with a total of 88 cases. The study found that the characteristics of spontaneous SCI included a median age of 65.5 years, anterior spinal artery infarction being the most common syndrome, and differences in etiology and diagnostic certainty between the two centers. The article also emphasized the importance of establishing standards for pre- and in-hospital care to improve treatment outcomes.
