National, longitudinal NASCITA birth cohort study: prevalence of overweight at 12 months of age in children born healthy

Antonio Clavenna et al.

Summary: This study analyzed an Italian birth cohort and found that the prevalence of overweight at 12 months was 23.5%, with big infant appetite and living in southern Italy being the main factors associated with a higher likelihood of being overweight. Breastfeeding practice did not influence the chance of being overweight, but was associated with changes in BMI z score at 12 months. The study concludes that sociodemographic factors play a significant role in the likelihood of childhood overweight at 12 months and early interventions may help prevent obesity.

Meta-analysis of diagnostic properties of the Whooley questions to identify depression in perinatal women

Robert D. Smith et al.

Summary: The study found that the Whooley questions have high sensitivity but moderate specificity for identifying depression in perinatal women. While it is a short and acceptable tool for this purpose, there is a potential risk of incorrectly identifying a high proportion of women as positive. The use of the Whooley questions followed by a secondary case-finding tool could help reduce this misdiagnosis risk.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on physical and mental health of Asians: A study of seven middle-income countries in Asia

Cuiyan Wang et al.

Summary: This study compared the mental health status during the COVID-19 pandemic in the general population of seven middle income countries in Asia, revealing significant differences among these countries. Risk factors for adverse mental health included younger age, higher education background, single or separated status, discrimination by other countries, and contact with people with COVID-19. On the other hand, protective factors for mental health included male gender, living with children or more people in the same household, employment, confidence in doctors, high perceived likelihood of survival, and spending less time on health information.

Summary: This study examined the association between preterm birth and postpartum depressive symptoms, finding a significant relationship between very preterm and extremely preterm births and maternal hopelessness, but no association between preterm birth and loss of interest. The results suggest the need for comprehensive screening for depression among women who give birth prematurely to improve postpartum care.
