Does hospital design impact on patient activity levels and time spent alone?

I. C. M. Rosbergen et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of hospital design on patients' activity levels, location, and interactions. The findings suggest that hospital design can influence patients' physical activity, with single rooms potentially leading to increased isolation and decreased interaction with nursing staff.

Mapping the impact of ICU design on patients, families and the ICU team: A scoping review

Sian Saha et al.

Summary: The scoping review aimed to map outcomes and describe effects of intensive care unit (ICU) design features on patients, family, and healthcare professionals (HCPs). Only a few studies included patient/family reported outcomes, and single room layouts may benefit patients and family but contribute to adverse outcomes for healthcare professionals.

Impact of transition from open bay to single room design neonatal intensive care unit on multidrug-resistant organism colonization rates

A. van der Hoeven et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) design on the colonization rates of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) and third-generation cephalosporin-resistant bacteria (3G-CRB). The results showed that transitioning from an open bay unit (OBU) to a single room unit (SRU) design did not reduce the colonization rates of MDROs or 3G-CRB. Further research is needed to prevent the acquisition and spread of resistant bacteria in high-risk departments like the NICU and to optimize ward design.

Patients' and Nurses' Experiences of All Single-Room Hospital Accommodation: A Scoping Review

Susanne Friis Sondergaard et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the experiences of patients and nurses regarding single-room hospital accommodation. Patients focused on personal control, dignity, and solitude, while nurses were concerned with the working environment, changes in nursing practice, privacy and dignity, and patient safety. The study concluded that the implications of single-room accommodation are complex and interdependent, extending beyond hospital design.

Associations Between Single-Family Room Care and Breastfeeding Rates in Preterm Infants

Hege Grundt et al.

Summary: The study found that infants in single-family rooms had earlier first milk expression and first attempt at breastfeeding, were fed a greater amount of mother's milk, and more infants were exclusively directly breastfed from discharge until 4 months old. However, there were no significant differences in milk production and breastfeeding self-efficacy between the two units.

Parents' Experiences With a Model of Integrated Maternity and Neonatal Care Designed to Empower Parents

Mireille Stelwagen et al.

Summary: In a study exploring the experiences of parents in an integrated maternity and neonatal ward providing family-integrated care (FICare), it was found that parents benefitted from 24-hour real-time care and private rooms, which deepened their understanding of newborn care and self-management skills, enabling them to make better informed decisions upon discharge.

Summary: The study found that transitioning from OBU to SRU did not significantly reduce the incidence of NIs in preterm neonates, including CLABSI. Thus, the study suggests that the move to SRUs should not be solely based on infection control strategies.

Summary: The study found that single-family room design can increase parental presence in the neonatal intensive care unit, but does not significantly improve maternal well-being. Fathers have higher involvement in care and comforting activities, but overall involvement time remains lower than mothers.

Use of single-bed rooms may decrease the incidence of hospital-acquired infections in geriatric patients: A retrospective cohort study in Central Denmark region

Summary: The study found that older patients in single-bed accommodation have a lower risk of hospital-acquired infections compared to those in multi-bed rooms. This suggests that single-bed accommodation may be an effective strategy in reducing the risk of infections in hospital settings. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.
