Advances in the Pharmacological and Non-pharmacological Management of Non-motor Symptoms in Parkinson's Disease: An Update Since 2017

Daniel J. van Wamelen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to provide an updated review on advances in pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and exercise-based interventions for non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD). The study found that since 2017, new strategies for managing NMS have emerged, such as the use of droxidopa for orthostatic hypotension, various dopaminergic treatment options for insomnia, and a range of non-pharmacological and exercise-based interventions for cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms, pain, and insomnia and excessive sleepiness. The conclusion is that targeted non-pharmacological treatments and other NMS management options may have a significant beneficial effect on the quality of life and should be considered in the treatment pathways of PD.

Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson Disease: A Meta-analysis of the Long-term Neuropsychological Outcomes

Madalina Bucur et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the long-term effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) on cognitive functions in patients with Parkinson's disease. The results showed that DBS can lead to both positive effects, such as a mild improvement in anxiety and depression, and negative effects, including a decline in long-term memory, verbal fluency, and specific subdomains of executive functions.

Parkinson's disease and intensive exercise therapy - An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Mads Gamborg et al.

Summary: This review aimed to update the literature on Parkinson's disease (PD) and exercise by assessing the effects of different intensive exercise modalities. The results showed that resistance training (RT), endurance training (ET), and other intensive exercise modalities (OITM) are safe, feasible, and beneficial strategies for rehabilitation in PD, with RT and ET showing solid effects.

Effect of Physical Activity on Depression in Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Jianing Tian et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of 14 RCT studies and found that physical activity can moderately improve depression symptoms in PD patients, especially in those with a disease duration of more than 5 years. However, larger sample sizes and high-quality studies are needed in the future to validate these effects.

Effects of Bilateral Subthalamic Nucleus Stimulation on Depressive Symptoms and Cerebral Glucose Metabolism in Parkinson's Disease: A 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography Study

Xiaoxiao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study suggests that STN-DBS treatment can significantly reduce the severity of both motor and depressive symptoms in PD patients with TRD. The treatment also improves daily functioning and quality of life. Furthermore, changes in brain glucose metabolism are associated with the improvement in depressive symptoms. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of the study.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Depressive Disorder in Caregivers of Individuals With Parkinson Disease

Yu Lee et al.

Summary: Depression was found to be the most prevalent psychiatric diagnosis among caregivers of individuals with Parkinson disease, with duration of caregiving, severity of anxiety, and severity of fatigue being significant associated factors for the development of depression. Early diagnosis is crucial for providing suitable support and treatment which may improve caregivers' quality of life.

Summary: This study found that PD patients with depression had significantly higher scores in all domains of PDQ-39 compared to those without depression. Patients in the depression group had longer disease duration, higher UPDRS-III scores, and higher H-Y stage levels. Various factors including age, disease duration, UPDRS-III, H-Y stage, HAMD score may independently affect PDQ-39SI in PD patients, with HAMD having the greatest impact.
