Improving Sexual Health in US Rural Communities: Reducing the Impact of Stigma

Jo A. Valentine et al.

Summary: Sexually transmitted infections (STI), including HIV, are highly reported diseases in the U.S. and face significant health disparities, particularly in rural areas. Local health departments serve as the main providers for STI care in rural communities, but are hindered by inadequate capacity and poor rural population health. Stigma and other key determinants of health exacerbate STI disparities in rural settings, highlighting the need for community involvement in developing effective, sustainable, and non-stigmatizing prevention programs.

Sexually Transmitted Infection Epidemiology and Care in Rural Areas: A Narrative Review

Wiley D. Jenkins et al.

Summary: The research explores the impact of various factors - such as epidemiology, health services, political and economic, and social norms - on STI risk and screening in rural areas. It found that diminishing access to health services, stigmatization, and social norms can contribute to increased STI risk in these areas. The study suggests that tailored interventions for rural environments are needed to address the significant scope of STI in rural areas.
