However, more research is needed to clarify the role of bladder-preservation for patients with variant histology.

Non-metastatic muscle-invasive bladder cancer: the role of age in receiving treatment with curative intent

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of patients and tumors associated with remaining untreated in patients with potentially curable, non-metastatic muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), and to compare the survival of untreated patients with treated patients with similar characteristics. The results show that approximately one in five patients with non-metastatic MIBC remained untreated. Untreated patients were generally older and had a poorer prognosis. Regardless of age, untreated patients had significantly worse overall survival.

Open Radical Cystectomy versus Robot-Assisted Radical Cystectomy with Intracorporeal Urinary Diversion: Early Outcomes of a Single-Center Randomized Controlled Trial

Summary: This study compared perioperative and 6-month outcomes between open radical cystectomy (ORC) and robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC) with totally intracorporeal urinary diversion (UD). Results showed that RARC with intracorporeal UD had a significantly lower overall perioperative transfusion rate compared to ORC. However, perioperative complications, hospital stay, and 6-month health-related quality of life were similar between the two groups. Long-term follow-up is needed to assess oncologic and functional outcomes.

Effect of Robot-Assisted Radical Cystectomy With Intracorporeal Urinary Diversion vs Open Radical Cystectomy on 90-Day Morbidity and Mortality Among Patients With Bladder Cancer A Randomized Clinical Trial

Summary: This study compared the recovery and morbidity of patients undergoing robot-assisted radical cystectomy with intracorporeal reconstruction versus open radical cystectomy for bladder cancer. The results showed that robot-assisted surgery resulted in a statistically significant increase in the number of days alive and out of the hospital within 90 days of surgery. In addition, robot-assisted surgery had lower rates of thromboembolic and wound complications compared to open surgery. Patients who underwent robot-assisted surgery also reported better quality of life and less disability compared to those who underwent open surgery.

Complications and Outcomes of Salvage Cystectomy after Trimodality Therapy

Summary: This study compared postoperative outcomes between salvage cystectomy post-trimodality therapy, primary cystectomy, and primary cystectomy with prior history of nontrimodality therapy abdominal or pelvic radiotherapy. It was found that salvage cystectomy post-trimodality therapy had a higher incidence of late complications, but disease-specific survival and overall survival were comparable to the other groups.
