A critical analysis of laboratory and clinical research methods to study root and canal anatomy

Hany Mohamed Aly Ahmed

Summary: The technical execution of root canal treatment procedures requires a thorough understanding of root and canal anatomy. Various research methods have been employed to study the root and canal anatomy of human dentition, resulting in an increased body of knowledge. This review critically analyzes laboratory and clinical research methods and suggests future research directions and translation to clinical endodontics.

Prevalence and correlation of C-shaped root canals of mandibular premolars and molars in Eastern Chinese individuals

Cheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence, correlation, and differences of C-shaped root canals (CSRCs) morphology in permanent mandibular premolars and molars in Eastern Chinese individuals using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study found a high prevalence of CSRCs in mandibular first premolars (MFPs) and mandibular second molars (MSMs), with significant differences in prevalence between genders. However, there was no correlation between CSRCs in mandibular second premolars (MSPs) and mandibular first molars (MFMs), which had a lower prevalence.

Evaluation of C-shaped canals in mandibular second molars of a selected patient group using cone beam computed tomography: prevalence, configuration and radicular groove types

Sema Sonmez Kaplan et al.

Summary: This study found a considerably high prevalence (10.7%) of C-shaped root canals in mandibular second molars in a Turkish sub-population, with females showing a higher occurrence. CBCT was effective in detecting C-shaped canals, highlighting the importance for dentists to consider this possibility in treatment.

Root canal morphology and variations in mandibular second molars: an in vivo cone-beam computed tomography analysis

Francisco Gomez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify anatomical variations of mandibular second molars' root canal system using CBCT. Results showed a variety of root and root canal configurations, with two roots, three root canals, and two apical foramina being the most prevalent. Additionally, C-shaped root canal systems and extra roots were also observed.
