Roots and Root Canals Characterization of Permanent Mandibular Premolars Analyzed Using the Cone Beam and Micro Computed Tomography-A Systematic Review and Metanalysis

Mohmed Isaqali Karobari et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the literature on root canal configuration (RCC) and root structure of permanent mandibular premolars. A systematic search was conducted on four electronic databases to find relevant scientific literature up to July 2022. The selected studies focused on mandibular premolars, including their root and canal system, morphology, along with anatomy. The findings of the study revealed the prevalence of different RCC types and the use of CBCT imaging for studying the structural characteristics of mandibular premolars.

Anatomical Evaluation of Mandibular Premolars in Saudi Population: An In Vivo Cone-beam Computed Tomography Study

Mohammed Mashyakhy et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the root canal morphology of mandibular premolars in a Saudi sub-population using CBCT radiographic analysis. The results showed variations in root canal morphology of mandibular premolars, and CBCT with a small field of view can help in cases where periapical x-ray is inconclusive.

Evaluation of root canal morphology in permanent maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth in Saudi subpopulation using two classification systems: a CBCT study

Azhar Iqbal et al.

Summary: Adequate knowledge of root canal morphology and possible variations is crucial for successful root canal treatment. This study included 3420 samples from 285 cone-beam computed tomography images of Saudi residents, revealing a higher prevalence of canal variations in mandibular permanent anteriors and limited gender differences in root canal morphology except for canines.

Root and Canal Morphology of Mandibular Premolars in a Saudi Subpopulation: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study

Saad M. Al-Zubaidi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the root and canal morphology of mandibular premolars in a Saudi subpopulation using CBCT. It was found that the majority of premolars had a single root with a type I canal system, but there were variations in the number of roots and canal classifications.

A study of mandibular premolar root and canal morphology in a Black South African population using cone-beam computed tomography and two classification systems

Glynn D. Buchanan et al.

Summary: The configurations of mandibular premolar roots and canals in a population of Black South Africans were investigated. It was found that the majority of mandibular premolars had a single root and a single canal. Multiple canals and C-shaped morphology were more common in mandibular first premolars. There were relationships between sex and certain features. The Ahmed et al. system was superior to the Vertucci classification in reporting complex configurations and anatomical variations.

Application of a new system for classifying root and canal anatomy in studies involving micro-computed tomography and cone beam computed tomography: Explanation and elaboration

H. M. A. Ahmed et al.

Summary: Adequate knowledge and accurate characterization of root and canal anatomy are crucial for successful root canal treatment. A new coding system has been introduced to classify root and canal morphology, accessory canals, and anomalies. Micro-CT and CBCT have been extensively used to study root and canal anatomy, and this review aims to discuss the application of the new coding system and provide a detailed guide for appropriate characterization.

Cone-beam computed tomography evaluation of C-shaped root and canal morphology of mandibular premolars

Gisbeli Brea et al.

Summary: This study used CBCT to evaluate the presence of C-shaped configurations in mandibular premolars, finding a prevalence of 19.2%. The study observed slight differences in C-shaped root canal system prevalence between male and female patients. The presence of C-shaped anatomical systems was found to be higher in mandibular first premolars.

Prevalence of complex root canal morphology in the mandibular first and second premolars in Thai population: CBCT analysis

Paramee Thanaruengrong et al.

Summary: Mandibular premolars in a Thai population commonly exhibit Vertucci type I root canal configuration, with over 98% having a single root. The prevalence of a bifurcation in the mandibular first and second premolars was 28.5% and 1.5%, respectively. A trifurcation was present in 3.2% of mandibular first premolars. The prevalence of a C-shaped root canal was 23.7% and 0.7% in the mandibular first and second premolars.

Youssef A. Algarni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the root and root canal morphology of mandibular first premolar among Saudi Arabian subpopulation, and found a higher chance of the presence of a second canal in male patients. Understanding the root canal configuration is crucial for successful endodontic treatment.

Root and canal morphology of the anterior permanent dentition in Malaysian population using two classification systems: A CBCT clinical study

Mohmed Isaqali Karobari et al.

Summary: This study utilized CBCT images to evaluate the root canal morphology of permanent anteriors in a Malaysian population, finding that mandibular anterior teeth were predominantly single-rooted. Variations in mandibular incisor canals were more common in males and the 20-30 age group, with the Malay ethnic group showing a higher prevalence of variations in mandibular incisors.
