Effect of mitigation technologies on the total cost and carbon dioxide emissions of a cement plant under multi-objective mixed linear programming optimisation

Siti Aktar Ishak et al.

Summary: This study proposed a systematic model for cost-optimal cement production that reduces CO2 emissions without compromising product specifications. The model considers co-processing, kiln system improvements, and carbon capture as mitigation methods, and it was found that more than 90% CO2 emissions can be reduced with a cost of USD 135.96/tonne clinker.

Characterization and source analysis of water-soluble inorganic ionic species in PM2.5 during a wintertime particle pollution episode in Nanjing, China

Yangzhihao Zhan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentration and sources of water-soluble inorganic ions in the atmosphere during a wintertime haze event in the Yangtze River Delta region of China in January 2019. The findings indicated that nitrate was one of the major sources, with local emissions playing a significant role in contributing to the pollution.

Responses of fine particulate matter and ozone to local emission reductions in the Sichuan Basin, southwestern China

Summary: The study suggests that significant emission reductions are required to meet Chinese and WHO pollution standards, compared to the governmental targets. It also emphasizes the importance of reducing both SCB and non-SCB emissions to achieve the desired pollution targets.

Control of particulate nitrate air pollution in China

Shixian Zhai et al.

Summary: The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in China decreased by 30-50% from 2013 to 2018 due to emission controls, but the nitrate component did not decrease effectively. Increased particulate nitrate concentration during winter haze pollution events is attributed to the particulate fraction transitioning from gaseous nitric acid. Reducing ammonia emissions is suggested as an effective method to decrease the nitrate component of fine particulate matter pollution in the North China Plain.

Critical Role of Simultaneous Reduction of Atmospheric Odd Oxygen for Winter Haze Mitigation

Xiao-Feng Huang et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 lockdown led to reductions in secondary aerosol components in eastern China due to decreases in precursor emissions, but insufficient VOC reduction limited further decreases in aerosols; areas with decreased Ox during the lockdown experienced greater PM2.5 decreases, indicating the importance of VOC control in future policies to mitigate winter haze more efficiently.
