Highly-resolved spatial-temporal variations of air pollutants from Chinese industrial boilers*

Yali Tong et al.

Summary: This study developed a county-based atmospheric emission inventory of PM, PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOx, OC and EC from Chinese industrial boilers in 2017 for the first time. The results showed that coal-fired industrial boilers had the highest emissions, and biomass-fired industrial boilers also made significant contributions in central and southern China. Seasonal peaks in emissions were observed during heating seasons.

Effect of the Coal Preparation Process on Mercury Flows and Emissions in Coal Combustion Systems

Daiwei Ouyang et al.

Summary: Coal preparation effectively reduces primary mercury emissions by altering mercury flows, but secondary emissions may occur during the combustion of byproducts. Uncertainty in evaluating the impact of coal preparation in China stems from inconsistent statistics, unclear mercury distribution characteristics, and limited information on byproduct utilization pathways.

Potential environmental risk of trace elements in fly ash and gypsum from ultra-low emission coal-fired power plants in China

Deming Han et al.

Summary: The ultra-low emission retrofitting in China's coal-fired power plants enhances removal efficiencies of trace elements, but may increase their contents in fly ash and gypsum. While the potential environmental risks of trace elements in gypsum are low, there are moderate risks from fly ash, particularly in provinces like Guangxi, Hunan, and Hebei. Special attention should be given to the disposal of fly ash in these areas in the future.

Refined spatio-temporal emission assessment of Hg, As, Cd, Cr and Pb from Chinese coal-fired industrial boilers

Jiajia Gao et al.

Summary: Coal-fired industrial boilers are a significant source of trace metals emissions in China. A high-resolution emission inventory for Hg, As, Cd, Cr, and Pb in 2017 was established based on data from over 61,000 CFIBs. The study found that emissions were concentrated in northern and eastern regions, with seasonal variations and an overall decrease in emissions due to control measures.
