Structural, shear and volume relaxation in a commercial float glass during aging

Shannon Jurca et al.

Summary: This study investigates the volume, structural, and shear relaxation behavior of a Na-Ca-Mg silicate glass using density, Raman spectroscopy, and viscosity measurements. The results show that the aging of the glass leads to a disproportionation of Q species, and all three relaxation processes exhibit stretched exponential kinetics with similar timescale and stretching exponent, indicating a close mechanistic relationship. The study also suggests that the presence of strongly and weakly constrained domains or structural moieties in the glass or supercooled liquid can cause temporal decoupling between the structural and shear relaxation processes.

Effect of structural relaxation on crystal nucleation in glasses

Summary: Applying the Classical Nucleation Theory to glass crystallization faces difficulties due to overlooking the influence of structural relaxation. Experimental findings demonstrate that glass relaxation significantly affects nucleation kinetics, leading to an increase in nucleation rate.

Structural origin of thermal shrinkage in soda-lime silicate glass below the glass transition temperature: A theoretical investigation by microsecond timescale molecular dynamics simulations

Masahiro Shimizu et al.

Summary: This study uses microsecond time-scale molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the origin of thermal shrinkage in soda-lime silicate glass below T-g. It is found that during annealing below T-g, Na ions penetrate the silicate rings, correcting their angles and ultimately leading to volume reduction in the glass. This cation displacement-induced dynamical structural relaxation evokes overall volume relaxation at low temperatures in glassy materials.
