Enhancement of electrohydrodynamic force with AC bias voltage in three-electrode dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators

Shintaro Sato et al.

Summary: A novel DBD plasma actuator module with separated ionization and acceleration processes was developed. By embedding a third electrode and using an AC waveform as the bias voltage, the electric field intensity was enhanced and a stable ionic wind was generated.

In-Flight Demonstration of Stall Improvement Using a Plasma Actuator for a Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Satoshi Sekimoto et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow control capability of a DBD-PA under natural and in-flight conditions using field flight tests with a UAV. The results show that the DBD-PA can achieve higher pitch angles and lower airspeeds when switched on, indicating its effectiveness in both natural and in-flight situations.

Development of a flexible dielectric-barrier-discharge plasma actuator fabricated by inkjet printing using silver nanoparticles-based ink

Shintaro Sato et al.

Summary: A flexible dielectric-barrier-discharge (DBD) plasma actuator fabricated by an inkjet printing process using metallic inks has been shown to generate stable surface discharge and ionic wind for active airflow control. This new fabrication method expands the application field of DBD plasma actuators to include complex curved surfaces and full-scale size applications.

Fabrication of a multi-stage plasma synthetic jet actuator using printed electronics

Shintaro Sato et al.

Summary: A new concept of electrode shape and arrangement is proposed for developing a multi-stage plasma synthetic jet actuator that can operate at low voltage, producing uniform discharge and unidirectional ionic wind. Particle image velocimetry measurements show that the wall-normal jet induced by the actuator is characterized as an axisymmetric free shear flow.

Surface-charge control strategy for enhanced electrohydrodynamic force in dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators

Shintaro Sato et al.

Summary: The relationship between electric potential distribution on a dielectric surface and EHD force generation has been experimentally investigated to improve the performance of DBD plasma actuators. Results showed that adding an additional downstream exposed electrode can significantly improve the generation of ionic wind by preventing electric field screening.
