Engineering the Comfort-of-Wear for Next Generation Wearables

Tokihiko Shimura et al.

Summary: Wearable technologies are increasingly important in the fields of information technology and healthcare, driven by societal issues. Flexible wearable devices have shown promise in long-term healthcare monitoring, with improved signal integrity and multimodality. However, the comfort of wear is a critical factor for wearable devices, similar to choosing comfortable clothes. Engineering approaches can be used to improve device comfort through flexibility and a combination of structures, materials, and systems.

Intrinsically flexible displays: key materials and devices

Zhiyuan Zhao et al.

Summary: Continuous progress in flexible electronics is bringing more convenience and comfort to human lives. However, it is a huge challenge to develop intrinsically flexible displays due to the limited size and shape of the display panel. To address this, it is crucial to develop intrinsically flexible electrode, semiconductor, and dielectric materials, as well as relevant flexible transistor drivers and display panels. This review highlights recent progress in this field and proposes suggestions and prospects for the future development of intrinsically flexible displays.

Enhanced gas separation by free volume tuning in a crown ether-containing polyimide membrane

Beibei Zhang et al.

Summary: Tuning the coupled free volume and pore size distribution of a polyimide membrane using bulky -CF3 groups and crown ether rings was found to be effective for enhancing gas permeability and selectivity. The introduction of crown ether into the membrane backbone resulted in a decrease in free volume but an increase in relative available free volume ratio. The copolymerization with crown ether also changed the pore size distribution, leading to a significant increase in gas selectivity, particularly for CO2/CH4.

Highly Elastic and Corrosion-Resistive Metallic Glass Thin Films for Flexible Encapsulation

Jeong-Hyun Woo et al.

Summary: Ternary CuZrTi metallic glass thin films synthesized by sputtering are suggested as highly flexible and corrosion-resistant encapsulation materials. The films retain amorphous structure and do not oxidize even after 1000 hours in a harsh environment. The encapsulation performance is maintained even after repeated bending, indicating potential applications.

Derivation of analytical expressions for the stress/strain distributions, bending plane and curvature radius in multilayer thin-film composites

Joao Mouro et al.

Summary: This study derives analytical expressions for the bending plane, curvature radii, and stress/strain distributions of multilayer composite devices under different stress and strain scenarios, and evaluates the dependence of curvature radii and stress distributions on mechanical properties of the composite. Case studies are used to analyze and compare these models, discussing their applicability in designing flexible sensors and practical limitations.

Construction of polyimide films with excellent dimensional stability and toughness via incorporating point-to-face multi-coordination structure

Qian Yin et al.

Summary: A novel polyimide film with excellent dimensional stability and toughness was designed in this study, featuring a point-to-face multi-coordination structure. The film exhibited outstanding performance under high temperature, multiple heating-cooling cycles, and cyclic tension due to the destruction and rapid reconstruction of the point-to-face multi-coordination structure. Compared to traditional polyimide films, the film with 20mol% Cu2+ showed significantly reduced thermal expansion coefficient and increased tensile strength, breaking elongation, and fracture energy.
