Quantifying Activation Rates of Scissile Mechanophores and the Influence of Dispersity

Anna C. Overholts et al.

Summary: Accurate and quantitative characterization of structure-mechanochemical activity relationships is crucial for understanding mechanochemical reactivity and advancing the field of polymer mechanochemistry. Ultrasound-induced mechanical activation of polymers is a common method for studying mechanophore reactivity, but traditional methods for analyzing chain scission kinetics from GPC measurements may provide misleading results. This study demonstrates the importance of spectroscopic analysis in accurately determining mechanophore activation rates, highlighting the need for a unified approach to kinetic analysis in polymer mechanochemistry.

Examining the Impact of Relative Mechanophore Activity on the Selectivity of Ultrasound-Induced Mechanochemical Chain Scission

Anna C. Overholts et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the activation efficiency of different mechanophores under ultrasound-induced mechanical force and found that the characteristics of the mechanophore and its position in the polymer chain play crucial roles in determining the selectivity of ultrasound-induced mechanophore activation.

Competitive Activation Experiments Reveal Significantly Different Mechanochemical Reactivity of Furan-Maleimide and Anthracene-Maleimide Mechanophores

Stella M. Luo et al.

Summary: Our understanding of mechanochemical reactivity has significantly improved over the past two decades. However, limited knowledge of structure-activity relationships and governing principles hampers molecular design. Simple computational tools like CoGEF have aided the experimental development of mechanophores, allowing the extraction of quantitative metrics like rupture force to estimate reactivity.

Harnessing the Power of Force: Development of Mechanophores for Molecular Release

Brooke A. Versaw et al.

Summary: Mechanophores, stress-sensitive molecules that release small molecules from polymers, show great promise in achieving selective and controlled release of covalently bound payloads. While the field of polymer mechanochemistry is rapidly advancing, further fundamental and technological advancements are still needed for significant impact in this research area.

Heterolytic Bond Cleavage in a Scissile Triarylmethane Mechanophore

James R. Hemmer et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new mechanochromic triarylmethane mechanophore that dissociates through scissile heterolytic pathway and exhibits a pronounced mechanochromic response. This mechanophore can be incorporated as a cross-linker into polymer networks and undergo color change upon compression or tensile deformation.

Generation of an Elusive Permanent Merocyanine via a Unique Mechanochemical Reaction Pathway

Molly E. McFadden et al.

Summary: The discovery of a 2H-naphtho[1,2-b]pyran mechanophore that produces a permanent merocyanine dye upon mechanochemical activation is reported. The irreversible nature of the mechanically generated merocyanine is attributed to a unique reaction involving the scission of an ester C-O bond. This permanent coloration offers new opportunities for sensing, force-recording applications, and fundamental studies.

Modeling ultrasound-induced molecular weight decrease of polymers with multiple scissile azo-mechanophores

Mathieu A. Ayer et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the mechanoresponsive behavior of polyurethanes containing multiple randomly distributed azo motifs as scissile mechanophores. A systematic comparison of ultrasound-induced cleavage of azo-containing polymers with different molecular weights and azo content was conducted, revealing site-specific cleavage at the azo position over random bond scission events. The proposed mathematical model is a broadly useful method for characterizing ultrasound-induced molecular weight decrease of polymers containing multiple scissile mechanophores.
