Historical Vignette Portraying the Difference Between the Sinking Skin Flap Syndrome and the Syndrome of the Trephined in Decompressive Craniectomy

Nathan Beucler et al.

Summary: Decompressive craniectomy is a possible therapeutic option for extreme cases of traumatic brain injury and malignant ischemic stroke. The history of decompressive craniectomy involves various discoveries that have been progressively confused and forgotten. The syndrome of the trephined and the sinking skin flap syndrome illustrate the paradigm shift in indications for cranioplasty.

The Kernohan-Woltman Notch Phenomenon : A Systematic Review of Clinical and Radiologic Presentation, Surgical Management, and Functional Prognosis

Nathan Beucler et al.

Summary: The Kernohan-Woltman notch phenomenon (KWNP) refers to an intracranial lesion causing compression against the contralateral cerebral peduncle. Neuroimaging shows KWNP as compression ischemic stroke in the contralateral cerebral peduncle with surrounding edema and potential compression of nearby cerebral arteries. Limited evidence is available regarding neuroimaging patterns and motor function prognostic factors for KWNP.

Diffuse axonal injury has a characteristic multidimensional MRI signature in the human brain

Dan Benjamini et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the changes in different MRI parameters related to DAI in traumatic brain injury, using a combination of MRI and histopathology. The results suggest that multidimensional MRI can effectively differentiate the severity of axonal injury and may serve as non-invasive biomarkers for DAI detection.

Crossed brainstem syndrome revealing bleeding brainstem cavernous malformation: an illustrative case

Nathan Beucler et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the proportion of CBS caused by bleeding episode arising from brainstem cavernous malformation reported in the literature. Hemorrhagic BCM accounted for approximately 7% of CBS cases. Microsurgical excision may be indicated after the second bleeding episode.

Prognostic Value of Hemorrhagic Brainstem Injury on Early Computed Tomography: A TRACK-TBI Study

John R. Williams et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with brainstem injuries can be divided into two groups with different recovery potentials. The results support the idea that newer CT imaging classification systems may enhance traditional clinical measures, such as GCS, in identifying TBI patients with brainstem injuries who are more likely to have favorable outcomes.
