The measurement of proprioceptive accuracy: A systematic literature review

Aron Horvath et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified and categorized different methods used to assess proprioceptive accuracy. The results showed that there are 8 different aspects of proprioception and various paradigms of psychophysics are applied. The findings suggest that there is no association between the outcomes of different tasks, highlighting the need to choose the appropriate measurement method based on theoretical considerations and ecological validity.

Summary: This article proposes a novel framework for human proprioception assessment, which includes low-level and high-level proprioceptive judgments. Low-level judgments are made within a single reference frame, while high-level judgments are made in a different reference frame.

Unintentional Force Drifts as Consequences of Indirect Force Control with Spatial Referent Coordinates

Valters Abolins et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phenomenon of unintentional force drifts in the absence of visual feedback. The results suggested that force drifts were significantly smaller when acting against more compliant springs. Furthermore, the lack of drift effects on both perception-to-report and perception-to-act supported the theory of control with spatial referent coordinates.

Effects of tendon vibration and age on force reproduction task performed with wrist flexors

Melanie Henry et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tendon vibration on a force reproduction task in different age groups. The results suggest that age-related alterations in proprioceptive system could affect the sense of force, and tactile acuity decreases with age.

Pinching Force Changes by Modulating the Interaction Gain Over the Fingertip

Devon Dollahon et al.

Summary: Motor control between the thumb and index finger is crucial for precise object manipulation. This study investigates the effect of interaction gain on motor control by changing the contact surface properties. The results show that subjects applied less force to the thumb when the contact surface area was smaller, and the force applied to the index finger remained unchanged. Tactile memory also influenced the pinching force.

Exploring Sex Differences and Force Level Effects on Grip Force Perception in Healthy Adults

Yan-Xia Li et al.

Summary: This study found that women were more accurate than men in grip force reproduction, particularly at higher force levels. The most accurate force reproductions for men were in the 30-50 N range, while for women it was in the 50-60 N range. These results shed light on the higher rates of musculoskeletal disorders among women and provide insights for researchers and clinicians to develop interventions and tools that can improve grip force perception and reduce hand injury rates in both men and women.

Fatigue, pain, and the recovery of neuromuscular function after consecutive days of full-body resistance exercise in trained men

Paul W. Marshall et al.

Summary: This study found that fatigue and pain increased significantly after the first day of training, and were not reduced at the beginning of the second day. The maximal voluntary torque and rate of torque development decreased after the first day, recovered by the second day, and did not change after the second training session. The maximal amplitude and rate of rise for the quadriceps twitch were reduced after both training sessions, with recovery within 24 hours after each session.
