Dissolved Lead (Pb) Concentrations and Pb Isotope Ratios Along the East China Sea and Kuroshio Transect-Evidence for Isopycnal Transport and Particle Exchange

Mengli Chen et al.

Summary: Lead isotopes are widely used in tracing the transportation of lead within the environment. Recent studies have discovered that sediments at the ocean boundary are an underestimated source and sink of lead. The seawater-sediment boundary along continental shelves may play an important role in marine lead cycling.

Summary: This study presents a simulation-based inversion model to estimate the quantitative contribution of different source materials to Pb in aerosols. The model improves our understanding of source apportionment and reveals the significant Pb contamination in the Indian atmosphere and its main sources.

Sulfur, lead, and mercury characteristics in South Africa coals and emissions from the coal-fired power plants

Teklit Zerizghi et al.

Summary: Coal-fired power plants are the main source of electricity in South Africa, but their emissions of SO2, Pb, and Hg have raised environmental and health concerns. This study assessed the forms and affinities of S, Pb, and Hg in South African coals, and estimated the emissions trends based on activity data. The results show that South African coals contain mainly organic and pyritic S, clay mineral-bound Pb, and possibly clay mineral and organic matter-associated Hg.

Spice Variables and Their Use in Physical Oceanography

Trevor J. McDougall et al.

Summary: There are various definitions of a spice type variable in physical oceanography, with differences in measuring water-mass variations and stability ratio. The potential spicity variable, based on the orthogonality principle, shows isopycnal differences more than a factor of 100 compared to other water-mass property measures. This makes potential spicity variables unsuitable for measuring water-mass variations along isopycnals.

Source waters contribution to the tropical Atlantic central layer: New insights on the Indo-Atlantic exchanges

Elias Azar et al.

Summary: This study illustrates how different Subtropical Mode Water types influence the upper thermocline of the tropical Atlantic Ocean, showing that 18 Degree Water and Madeira Mode Water play key roles in the North Atlantic. Additionally, Subtropical Mode Water from different regions affect the structure and currents of the South Atlantic.

Saumik Samanta et al.

Summary: This study presents a robust method for accurately and precisely measuring dissolved metals from seawater using seaFAST and quadrupole ICPMS, showing that online setup yields marginally lower blank values for metals based on short-term analysis. The method allows for accurate determination of Cd and Fe concentrations in low-metal seawaters.

Winter Biogeochemical Cycling of Dissolved and Particulate Cadmium in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (GEOTRACES GIpr07 Transect)

Ryan Cloete et al.

Summary: Winter distributions of dissolved cadmium and particulate cadmium were measured for the first time in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, revealing the important role of biological uptake in the biogeochemical cycling of cadmium during winter months, although weaker compared to summer. Distinct, biologically driven changes in cadmium cycling were observed across different latitudinal zones, with surface distributions of cadmium influenced by the preferential uptake and regeneration of diatoms with high cadmium content as well as the upwelling of cadmium-enriched water masses in the Antarctic zone.
