High-throughput telomere length measurement at nucleotide resolution using the PacBio high fidelity sequencing platform

Cheng-Yong Tham et al.

Summary: The authors developed a method using single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing to capture and accurately analyze the length of telomeres, addressing challenges in quantifying telomere length at the nucleotide level. Telomeres are specialized nucleoprotein structures at the ends of linear chromosomes, and their progressive shortening is a promising biomarker for age-associated diseases. The workflow involved capturing telomeres using new telobaits and measuring their length accurately with high resolution using SMRT sequencing. Results showed the heterogeneity of telomeric variant sequences (TVSs), which disrupt the continuity of the canonical telomere repeats and affect telomere protection.

Genetically predicted telomere length and its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases and life expectancy

Blanca Rodriguez-Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization analysis to test the potential causal role of telomere length (TL) in neurodegenerative disorders and life expectancy. The results suggested a protective effect of longer telomeres on Alzheimer's disease and an association between longer telomeres and increased life expectancy. However, no significant causal relationships were observed between TL and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Measurement and initial characterization of leukocyte telomere length in 474,074 participants in UK Biobank

V Codd et al.

Summary: Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is considered as a marker of biological age, with older age, male sex, and higher white cell count associated with shorter LTL. Additionally, there are differences in LTL between different ethnicities and sexes. This study provides an opportunity to further investigate the variation in LTL.

Neighborhood social environment and changes in leukocyte telomere length: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Rashida Brown et al.

Summary: The study found that changes in neighborhood socioeconomic and social conditions were associated with changes in leukocyte telomere length, with improvement in neighborhood socioeconomic status linked to slower telomere attrition, while increases in safety and overall neighborhood social environment score were associated with more pronounced telomere attrition. This suggests that broader social and socioeconomic contexts should be considered in relation to biological aging. Future research should further explore psychosocial mechanisms underlying these associations using longitudinal study designs.

Summary: Unhealthy lifestyles play a small role in mediating socioeconomic disparities in health among US and UK adults. While promoting healthy lifestyles alone may not substantially reduce socioeconomic health inequalities, it is still important in reducing the burden of disease in different socioeconomic subgroups.

Summary: This study revealed a social inequality in dementia diagnostic evaluation, showing that in Denmark, individuals with higher income tend to receive an earlier diagnosis. Public health strategies should focus on early dementia detection and intervention for individuals with lower socioeconomic status.

Summary: The study suggests that shorter leukocyte telomere length is associated with a higher risk of adverse COVID-19 outcomes, independent of major risk factors including age. Further research is needed to determine whether this association reflects causality.
