Deep learning-based PI-RADS score estimation to detect prostate cancer using multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging

Kadir Yildirim et al.

Summary: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, and accurate diagnosis is commonly achieved through digital rectal examination and prostate-specific antigen tests. To reduce unnecessary biopsies, multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) is used. However, there is low-level agreement and subjectivity in the interpretation of mpMRI scores. This study proposes a hybrid model to accurately interpret mpMRI examinations and predict scores, achieving a 96.09% accuracy rate.

Microfluidic capillary networks are more sensitive than ektacytometry to the decline of red blood cell deformability induced by storage

Nathaniel Z. Piety et al.

Summary: The study compared the sensitivity of capillary networks versus ektacytometry in assessing the deformability of red blood cells during hypothermic storage. Results showed that capillary networks were more sensitive in detecting differences between storage conditions and overall decline in RBC deformability compared to ektacytometry.

Rapid clearance of storage-induced microerythrocytes alters transfusion recovery

Camille Roussel et al.

Summary: This study found that a high proportion of SMEs in RBC concentrates from healthy volunteers correlated with poor transfusion recovery. When perfused through a human spleen, 15% and 61% of long-stored RBCs and SMEs were cleared within 70 minutes, respectively. High initial proportion of SMEs also correlated with high retention of RBCs by perfused human spleen.

Has the trend of declining blood transfusions in the United States ended? Findings of the 2019 National Blood Collection and Utilization Survey

Jefferson M. Jones et al.

Summary: The study found that in 2019, there was a 5.1% decrease in RBC collection and a 2.5% increase in RBC transfusion in the United States. Between 2017 and 2019, there was a decrease in platelet and plasma distributions, while platelet transfusions increased by 15.8% and plasma transfusions decreased by 8.0%.
