Sociability, but not spatial memory, is correlated with regional brain volume variation in the striped mouse Rhabdomys spp.

Candice Nikita Neves et al.

Summary: Local environmental conditions may lead to variations in behavioral responses and functional brain region volumes in animals. The study investigated the behavioral correlates of hippocampus and amygdala volumes in different sister taxa of the murid rodent genus Rhabdomys, revealing differences in spatial memory, social behavior, and brain volume among species. Social correlates appear to drive regional brain size within cryptic striped mouse taxa.

Variation in brain volume in nine populations and three taxa of the African striped mouse Rhabdomys

Candice Nikita Neves et al.

Summary: Brain size can vary between populations in different environments due to different selection pressures on behaviors such as learning and memory. In this study, researchers investigated the variation in total and regional brain size in a rodent genus called Rhabdomys from different environments in southern Africa. They found taxon- and population-level differences in total endocranial volume, as well as differences in relative cerebellum, olfactory bulb, and petrosal lobule volumes. Males also had larger total endocranial volumes than females. The driving factors behind larger endocranial volumes in certain populations, as well as the influence of environmental and social factors, are still unclear.

Morphology and postnatal ontogeny of the cranial endocast and paranasal sinuses of capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), the largest living rodent

Jose D. Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study focused on analyzing the cranial endocast morphology and paranasal sinuses of the largest living rodent, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, at different ontogenetic stages. The results showed changes in certain cranial features as the brain grows, and the cranial pneumatization increases with cranial growth. Additionally, the encephalization quotient decreases with individual age growth.

Scaling patterns of cerebellar petrosal lobules in Euarchontoglires: Impacts of ecology and phylogeny

Madlen M. Lang et al.

Summary: The study examines the influence of ecology on the relative size of petrosal lobules in the cerebellum. It finds a strong positive relationship between lobule size and endocranial volume and body mass. Significant differences in lobule size are identified between different orders and suborders. Fossorial taxa have smaller lobules relative to their body mass compared to other locomotor groups. No relationship is found between lobule size and other ecological variables.

Evolution and developmental plasticity of lung structure in high-altitude deer mice

Claire M. West et al.

Summary: Research on deer mice native to high altitude found that they have adapted lung structures that enhance oxygen uptake, with highlanders showing higher alveolar surface density. The study also revealed that lung development in highland deer mice is less affected by post-natal hypoxia compared to lowland mammals, with developmental plasticity potentially contributing to increased lung volume and total alveolar surface area.

Evolved changes in maternal care in high-altitude native deer mice

Summary: Mothers in high-altitude areas prioritize their own maintenance costs over investing heavily in offspring, while mothers in low-altitude areas focus more on offspring investment. Despite receiving less care, offspring of high-altitude mothers in cold hypoxia only experienced small growth restrictions and maintained body composition.

The impact of locomotion on the brain evolution of squirrels and close relatives

Ornella C. Bertrand et al.

Summary: The research indicates that body mass and phylogeny are correlated with brain size in rodents, while locomotion type influences the size of the brain, petrosal lobules, and neocortex. Species living in trees tend to have larger overall brain, petrosal lobule, and neocortical sizes compared to fossorial taxa.
