Vagally mediated heart rate variability, stress, and perceived social support: a focus on sex differences

Elisabet Kvadsheim et al.

Summary: The study found that higher heart rate variability (vmHRV) is closely related to higher perceived social support in females, especially under higher stress conditions. This is related to the evolutionary differences in stress management strategies between genders.

Perceptions towards an interaction partner predict social anxiety: an ecological momentary assessment study

J. Hannah Lee

Summary: Social anxiety often arises during everyday social interactions, and this study found that characteristics of interaction partners such as judgmentalness and unfamiliarity are positively associated with state social anxiety. The associations were stronger for individuals with high trait social anxiety. Different types of interaction partners and social settings also showed noticeable group differences in how they were associated with social anxiety.

Social buffering of human fear is shaped by gender, social concern, and the presence of real vs virtual agents

Yanyan Qi et al.

Summary: The impact of social concern on social buffering of fear is more significant in females than in males. The lower females scored on social concern, the stronger the reduction in skin conductance responses in the social compared to the alone treatment.

Heart Rate Variability in Psychology: A Review of HRV Indices and an Analysis Tutorial

Tam Pham et al.

Summary: HRV has been popularized in research due to its ease of collection and clinical relevance, but the complexity of analytical approaches poses challenges for users lacking background knowledge, highlighting the importance of improving users' understanding of HRV indices and standardizing analysis pipelines to ensure research reproducibility.
