Physico-mechanical and petrographic insights of Lockhart Limestone, sections of Islamabad, Pakistan

Wazir Zada et al.

Summary: This paper studies the physico-mechanical and petrographic attributes of Paleocene Lockhart Limestone in Islamabad's Rumli and Shah Allah Ditta sections. Petrographic analysis reveals the limestone mainly consists of mudstone and wackestone microfacies, with the micrite matrix enhancing its strength while veins, microfractures, and porosities affecting its stability. Based on UCS and PLT analyses, limestone samples with lower porosities and bioclasts exhibit higher UCS and PLT values. Physico-mechanical analyses show that the limestone meets the standards for wearing, coating, and cement concrete. It can also be used for geotechnical purposes. Simple regression analysis designates the limestone as moderately strong and suitable for road or bridge construction.

A Systematic Review of the Concrete Durability Incorporating Recycled Glass

Mohammed A. Mansour et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review examines the impact of recycled glass on the durability of concrete applications. The study found that glass can be used in the form of glass powder, glass aggregate, and glass fiber as a replacement or addition to concrete. The utilization of recycled glass has a positive effect on the durability of concrete, especially when multiple types of glass are used together. The results suggest that up to 20% glass powder and up to 30% fine glass aggregate can be replaced in concrete to improve its durability, without compromising its strength.

Properties and improvement of ultra-high performance concrete with coarse aggregates and polypropylene fibers after high-temperature damage

Yunfeng Qian et al.

Summary: Ultra-high performance concrete containing coarse aggregates (UHPC-CA) is cost-effective and easily accessible, but its high-temperature performance and self-healing capability after post-fire curing need further exploration. High temperature enhances cement hydration and pozzolanic reactions, increasing compressive strength by approximately 20 MPa at 400 degrees C. However, flexural strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity gradually decrease, while mass loss, porosity, and absorbed water increase. Adding finer PP fibers helps maintain residual values of all properties. UHPC has significant self-healing potential, particularly in water environments, where strength recovery exceeds 50% in all cases, relying on multiple physical and chemical reaction processes.

Influence of Petrogenesis on the Engineering Properties of Ultramafic Aggregates and on Their Suitability in Concrete

Petros Petrounias et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the use of petrology as a tool for construction applications, specifically investigating how the petrogenetic characteristics of ultramafic rocks from ophiolite complexes can predict the behavior of ultramafic aggregates in concrete. It was found that the genesis environment of the rocks is the critical factor in determining their engineering properties and suitability as concrete aggregates.

Resource Assessment of Limestone Based on Engineering and Petrographic Analysis

Javid Hussain et al.

Summary: The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a large-scale construction project in Pakistan that connects over 70 countries through various trade channels. The project involves the development of local infrastructure and industrial zones in Pakistan. Research conducted on the physical characteristics of Jurassic limestone in the Kirman hill region of District Kurram, Pakistan shows that it is suitable for construction materials and meets international standards.

Coupled dolomite and silica precipitation from continental weathering during deglaciation of the Marinoan Snowball Earth

Yihang Fang et al.

Summary: Geological records indicate that tropical areas were covered by multiple ice sheets in the late Neo-proterozoic era. The Snowball Earth concept, which suggests a completely frozen Earth due to the runaway ice-albedo effect, is widely accepted to explain these records. The intense deglaciation at the end of the Snowball Earth event was caused by extremely high levels of pCO(2) accumulated over millions of years. Using a geochemical model, we investigated the changes in sedimentary mineral deposits and ocean chemistry during and after a Snowball Earth event, providing insights into the occurrence and duration of postglacial dolomite burial and the relative intensity of silicate versus carbonate weathering based on cap dolostone formation and pH change.

Sustainable utilization of recycled aggregates: robust construction and demolition waste reduction strategies

Angelo De Luca et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the barriers and benefits of using recycled aggregates in the construction industry and emphasizes the importance of robust construction and demolition waste reduction strategies. The findings suggest that recycling construction and demolition waste could have a positive net benefit compared to the procurement and production of virgin aggregate materials with the same properties, leading to reduced resource consumption.
