Microalgae-based carbon capture and utilization: A critical review on current system developments and biomass utilization

Luong N. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current state of microalgal culture development for carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and highlights its potential contribution to addressing climate change challenges. Innovative system designs are crucial to achieve large-scale CO2 capture by microalgae, and downstream processes of microalgal culture are important for the overall success of microalgae-based CCU.

Recent advances in CO2 fixation by microalgae and its potential contribution to carbon neutrality

Peilun Xu et al.

Summary: This work reviews the current research on microalgae CO2 fixation technologies and the challenges faced by the related industries and government agencies. Technoeconomic analysis shows that cultivation is the major cost factor and the use of waste resources can significantly reduce costs and carbon footprints. Efforts and investments are needed to bridge the gaps in microalgae strain development, cultivation conditions and systems, and the utilization of renewable resources and energy.

Investigation of Effective Parameters on the Productivity of Biomass and Bio-cement as a Soil Improver from Chlorella vulgaris

Daryush Arabian

Summary: In this study, the effects of different types of nitrogen source and sodium bicarbonate, as well as various concentrations of carbon dioxide on the growth and bio-cement production of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae were investigated. The results showed that the use of nitrate as the nitrogen source greatly promoted the growth rate and biomass production of the microalgae. The concentration of sodium bicarbonate had a positive effect on the specific growth rate, while the concentration of carbon dioxide did not significantly affect the bio-cement precipitation.

Effects of Culture Conditions on the Performance of Arthrospira platensis and Its Production of Exopolysaccharides

Zihan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of initial pH, nitrogen source and concentration, phosphate concentration, and recycle times of the culture medium on the growth and EPS secretion of A. platensis. The results showed that EPS accumulated with the increase in recycle times of culture medium. Optimal initial pH for A. platensis growth was 8.50. Excessive and limited nitrogen and phosphate inhibited the biomass production of A. platensis but resulted in higher EPS content. High EPS yields were obtained under salt stress conditions.

Uncertainty analysis and stochastic studies of techno-economics of algal carbon sequestration at Indian coal powered plants

Bunushree Behera et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the economic feasibility of capturing industrial flue gas emissions, finding that capturing 10% of emissions had a 75% gross profit margin and the shortest payback time (0.93 years), while capturing 1% of emissions reduced operational expenses but generated insufficient revenue for process feasibility.

Changes in Properties of Soy Protein Isolate Edible Films Stored at Different Temperatures: Studies on Water and Glycerol Migration

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the storage of glycerol-plasticized soy protein isolate films at different temperatures and found that significant pores and cracks appeared on the film stored at 25 degrees Celsius. The results indicated that increasing the storage temperature accelerated water and glycerol loss, leading to a decrease in the mechanical properties of the SPI film.
