Role of senescence in the chronic health consequences of COVID-19

Erin O. Wissler Gerdes et al.

Summary: COVID-19 can have long-lasting effects on patients, known as Long-Hauler's Syndrome. Older adults are at greater risk for severe outcomes. The aging process may interfere with defenses against viral infection and contribute to increased risk for long-term COVID-19 sequelae. Senolytics and other geroscience interventions may be an option for delaying, preventing, or alleviating Long-Hauler's Syndrome.

The interplay of post-acute COVID-19 syndrome and aging: a biological, clinical and public health approach

Giovanni Guaraldi et al.

Summary: The post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) refers to the persistence of fluctuating symptoms for three months after the acute phase of COVID-19. Current data suggests that at least 10% of infected individuals may develop PACS, with a reported prevalence of 50-80% among survivors after hospital discharge. This viewpoint explores various aspects of PACS, particularly in older adults, and presents a hypothesis that PACS represents a modified aging trajectory induced by SARS-CoV-2.

Characteristics of long-COVID among older adults: a cross-sectional study

Vered Daitch et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term symptoms of COVID-19 in the elderly population and found that fatigue and dyspnea were common symptoms. Older adults were more likely to have respiratory impairment compared to younger individuals. Female gender and obesity were identified as risk factors for long-term COVID-19 symptoms. Further research is needed to understand the natural progression of long-COVID in the elderly population and explore interventions to promote rehabilitation and well-being.

Summary: This study is the first report from the United Kingdom on post-discharge symptoms in COVID-19 survivors, identifying fatigue, breathlessness, and psychological distress as common symptoms that require planning of rehabilitation services for appropriate management.

Follow-up of adults with noncritical COVID-19 two months after symptom onset

Claudia Carvalho-Schneider et al.

Summary: In noncritical COVID-19 patients, most individuals continued to experience symptoms up to 2 months after symptom onset, with the main complaints being anosmia/ageusia, dyspnoea, or asthenia. Factors associated with persistent symptoms included age 40-60 years old, hospital admission, and abnormal auscultation at symptom onset.

Older adults with SARS-CoV-2 infection: Utility of the clinical frailty scale to predict mortality

Marine Gilis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictive factors of mortality in older adults with COVID-19, including clinical frailty measured by the CFS. The findings showed that age, clinical frailty score, and dyspnea were associated with all-cause 30-day mortality, suggesting the importance of assessing frailty in managing elderly COVID-19 patients instead of solely relying on age as a restrictive criterion.

6-month consequences of COVID-19 in patients discharged from hospital: a cohort study (Publication with Expression of Concern. See vol. 401, pg. 90, 2023)

Chaolin Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term health consequences of discharged COVID-19 patients and associated risk factors, particularly disease severity. Patients with more severe illness during hospitalization showed more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for long-term recovery.

Summary: This study conducted a long-term follow-up on survivors of non-critical COVID-19 pneumonia, revealing significant impairment in pulmonary function and quality of life six weeks after discharge, particularly in diffusion capacity.

Persistent symptoms 1.5-6 months after COVID-19 in non-hospitalised subjects: a population-based cohort study

Knut Stavem et al.

Summary: The study assessed symptoms and their determinants 1.5-6 months after symptom onset in non-hospitalised subjects with confirmed COVID-19 until 1 June 2020. Findings showed that individuals reported fewer symptoms after 1.5-6 months compared to during the acute COVID-19 phase, with persistent symptoms being associated with the number of comorbidities and symptoms experienced during the acute phase.

Summary: The study found that most COVID-19 patients still experienced persistent symptoms and limitations in physical ability during the recovery period, but clinically significant abnormalities in chest radiograph, exercise tests, blood tests, and spirometry were less frequent, especially in patients who did not require supplementary oxygen during their acute infection.

Frailty is associated with in-hospital mortality in older hospitalised COVID-19 patients in the Netherlands: the COVID-OLD study

Laura C. Blomaard et al.

Summary: The in-hospital mortality rate of older hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the Netherlands was 38%. Frailty was independently associated with higher in-hospital mortality, even though COVID-19 patients with frailty presented earlier to the hospital with less severe symptoms.

Defining Post-COVID Symptoms (Post-Acute COVID, Long COVID, Persistent Post-COVID): An Integrative Classification

Cesar Fernandez-de-las-Penas et al.

Summary: The symptoms of long-haulers of COVID-19 can be classified into potentially infection-related, acute post-COVID, long post-COVID, and persistent post-COVID stages. Establishing time reference points is crucial, while the plethora of symptoms affecting multiple systems suggests the presence of different underlying mechanisms.

Health-related quality of life issues, including symptoms, in patients with active COVID-19 or post COVID-19; a systematic literature review

Cecilie Delphin Amdal et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified a wide range of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) issues experienced by COVID-19 patients, providing important information for clinicians to better recognize and treat the disease. The results also served as the basis for developing a COVID-19 specific patient-reported HRQoL questionnaire on an international scale.
