Characterization strategy for graphene oxide and molybdenum disulfide: Proceedings based on the ISO/TS 21356-1:2021 standard

Josue Marciano de Oliveira Cremonezzi et al.

Summary: Graphene-related materials are crucial for next-generation technologies, and their adoption by the industry relies on standardized characterization protocols. While the ISO/TS 21356-1:2021 standard has made significant progress in standardizing graphene characterization, there is still a need for robust strategies to characterize graphene oxide (GO) and other two-dimensional nanomaterials. This study presents a characterization strategy for GO and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) based on the ISO/TS standard and provides recommendations for further development of norms for the characterization of these materials.

Exploring the Size Effect of Graphene Oxide on Crystallization Kinetics and Barrier Properties of acid)

Weijiao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of graphene oxide size on the crystallization, barrier, and mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) composites. Results show that increasing the graphene oxide size improves the crystallization ability and modulus of poly(lactic acid), and enhances its barrier performance.

Cytotoxicity survey of commercial graphene materials from worldwide

Ritika Malhotra et al.

Summary: Graphene and other 2D materials have made significant contributions to science and technology. However, the lack of quality control and toxicity assessment has become a concern. This study investigates the cytotoxicity of 36 products labeled as graphene and reveals that the presence of impurities is the main determinant of cellular toxicity in these commercially available materials.

The characterisation of commercial 2D carbons: graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide

Peter W. Albers et al.

Summary: In this work, 13 products claimed to be 2D materials were comprehensively characterized, showing that they do not meet the ISO definition of a single layer of carbon atoms but are mainly composed of nanographite with a small percentage of single layer material present.

The Degree of Oxidation of Graphene Oxide

Alexandra Carvalho et al.

Summary: In this study, a precise determination of the oxygen content of graphene oxide samples was achieved by combining state-of-the-art ab initio computational modeling with X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The shift of the XPS C1s peak relative to pristine graphene was accurately described using a mathematical equation, providing a method for determining the degree of oxidation of graphene oxide.

Tailoring the graphene oxide chemical structure and morphology as a key to polypropylene nanocomposite performance

Pamela S. Garcia et al.

Summary: Two synthetic routes were designed to obtain graphene oxide (GO) with different degrees of oxidation and particle sizes, leading to improved performance in polypropylene (PP)/GO nanocomposites. The less oxidized GO-S showed better compatibility with PP matrix, resulting in enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties. Tailoring GO's oxidation degree and morphology is crucial for achieving ideal interfacial interactions in nanocomposites.
