Definition and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenic obesity: ESPEN and EASO consensus statement*

Lorenzo M. Donini et al.

Summary: Sarcopenic obesity (SO), the coexistence of excess adiposity and low muscle mass/function, is common in individuals with obesity and negatively impacts patient outcomes. This article presents an initiative by ESPEN and EASO to establish a consensus on the definition and diagnostic criteria for SO. The proposed diagnostic procedure includes assessment of skeletal muscle function and body composition to confirm the diagnosis of SO. The authors advocate for the implementation of these criteria in routine clinical practice.

D-3-creatine dilution for skeletal muscle mass measurement: historical development and current

Cassidy McCarthy et al.

Summary: The discovery of creatine in meat by French chemist Michel Eugene Chevreul two centuries ago led to the subsequent study of its presence in human skeletal muscles. Researchers have utilized various methods to estimate creatine pool size and calculate skeletal muscle mass, with the recent introduction of stable isotope dilution method generating renewed interest. However, the current assumptions and limitations of these methods raise concerns about their accuracy and reliability.

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment for community-dwelling, high-risk, frail, older people

Robert Briggs et al.

Summary: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) aims to determine the medical, psychological, and functional capabilities of older adults in order to develop a coordinated care plan. Studies suggest that CGA may reduce the risk of unplanned hospital admissions in community-dwelling, frail, older adults.

Validation of skeletal muscle mass estimation equations in active young adults: A preliminary study

Hiroyuki Sagayama et al.

Summary: The study found that previous estimation equations underestimated actual skeletal muscle mass, especially in participants with high trunk/ALST ratios (>1.05). A new equation was developed, including variables such as mass of ALST, trunk/ALST ratio, and percent body fat, which accounted for 90.3% of the variance in SMM. This equation may serve as a preliminary tool for healthy and active young males, including athletes.
