Fecal indicator bacteria along multiple environmental exposure pathways (water, food, and soil) and intestinal parasites among children in the rural northwest Ethiopia

Zemichael Gizaw et al.

Summary: This study assessed the environmental exposures of children to intestinal parasites in a region of Ethiopia. The study found extensive contamination of water, foods, and courtyard soil with E. coli, with potential sources of contamination including open defecation practices, unhygienic waste disposal, poor animal husbandry and keeping practices, and inadequate water and food safety measures at the household level. Fecal contamination of water, foods, and soil was linked to children's exposure to intestinal parasites in the region.

Progress in health among regions of Ethiopia, 1990-2019: a subnational country analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Awoke Misganaw et al.

Summary: Health in Ethiopia has shown significant improvements across regions and chartered cities over the past three decades, but progress in socioeconomic status, life expectancy, total fertility rate, premature mortality, disability, and risk factors has not been uniform. In 2019, leading causes of premature mortality included neonatal disorders, diarrhoeal diseases, lower respiratory infections, tuberculosis, stroke, HIV/AIDS, ischaemic heart disease, cirrhosis, congenital defects, and diabetes. Public health strategies and interventions should be tailored to address regional disparities to achieve national and regional health goals.

Why do people purchase antibiotics over-the-counter? A qualitative study with patients, clinicians and dispensers in central, eastern and western Nepal

Bipin Adhikari et al.

Summary: The study highlights how over-the-counter use of antibiotics in Nepal is contributing to antimicrobial resistance. Patients often bypass formal healthcare services and seek antibiotics at drug shops, where empirical use of broad-spectrum antibiotics without proper testing is common. There is a need for clear policy guidance and enforcement to address this issue and prevent further rise in antimicrobial resistance.

Food Hygiene Practices of Rural Women and Microbial Risk for Children: Formative Research in Nepal

Om Prasad Gautam et al.

Summary: Formative research conducted in rural Nepal highlighted key issues with mothers' food hygiene practices and emphasized the importance of the Behavior Centered Design theory and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points method. The study identified reasons for inadequate food hygiene among mothers and suggested six critical control points, with five key food hygiene risk behaviors to prioritize. Activities should be designed around motives of nurture, disgust, affiliation, and social status/respect to effectively promote safe food hygiene practices.
