Mitigation of lead (Pb) toxicity in rice cultivated with either ground water or wastewater by application of acidified carbon

Niaz Ahmed et al.

Summary: Toxicity induced by high lead concentration can negatively impact plant growth, gas exchange, and yield attributes, as well as pose cancer risks to humans. Organic amendments, such as biochar, can help alleviate lead toxicity in different crops. This study aimed to explore the efficacy of chemically produced acidified carbon (AC) in mitigating lead toxicity in rice. The results showed that the addition of 1% AC significantly improved plant height, spike length, and grain weight in rice. Moreover, the photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance also improved, confirming the effectiveness of 1% AC. Additionally, the application of 0.5% and 1% AC resulted in a significant decrease in electrolyte leakage and plant lead concentration, further validating the efficacy of these treatments in mitigating lead toxicity in rice.

Soil cadmium and lead affecting biochemical properties of Matricaria chamomilla L. at different growth stages in the greenhouse and field

Mohammad Bagheri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the accumulation of cadmium and lead by Matricaria chamomilla in soil, as well as the effects on plant biochemical properties at different growth stages. It was found that heavy metal stress led to decreased plant pigment contents, but increased proline, leaf relative water, lipid peroxidation, and superoxide dismutase activities. Interestingly, the highest proline content was observed in plants treated with lead, indicating its potential for bioremediation of Cd and Pb polluted soils.

Heavy metals immobilization and improvement in maize (Zea mays L.) growth amended with biochar and compost

Muhammad Irfan et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar and compost can reduce heavy metal content in soil and decrease toxicity in plants, with biochar showing more significant effects. Additionally, 4% biochar had better promotion effects on plant growth and nutrient status compared to compost.
