Presbyphonia as an Individual Process of Voice Change

Bozena Kosztyla-Hojna et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the individual variability of the severity of dysphonia in older women and men using perceptual voice assessment (GRBAS), laryngeal visualization technique (HSDI), and acoustic voice analysis (Diagnoscope Specjalista). The study included 302 elderly subjects, with 230 subjects in Group I with voice disorders, 72 subjects in Group II without dysphonia symptoms, and 50 subjects in Group III with euphonic voice. High-Speed Digital Imaging (HSDI) technique allowed to register mild asymmetry and aperiodicity of vibrations, MW reduction, and glottal insufficiency in women with edematous changes in the larynx, and moderate asymmetry, amplitude decrease, and glottal insufficiency in men with larynx atrophy. Acoustic analysis confirmed individual variability of Presbyphonia severity in the elderly, depending on the clinical form of dysphonia determined by gender.

Treating menopause - MHT and beyond

Susan R. Davis et al.

Summary: Menopause is a natural process that every woman will experience in midlife, characterized by the complete cessation of ovarian function. The age at which menopause occurs can influence a woman's health outcomes in later life. Early menopause is associated with reduced breast cancer risk but increased risks of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and premature death. Symptoms of menopause are due to a loss of ovarian estrogen production, which can be alleviated by menopausal hormone therapy (MHT). Comprehensively caring for postmenopausal women involves optimizing lifestyle and treating other chronic disease risk factors. This review focuses on the use of MHT and novel pharmaceutical alternatives to manage menopausal symptoms.

Voice and Speech Changes in Transmasculine Individuals Following Circumlaryngeal Massage and Laryngeal Reposturing

Kimberly L. Dahl et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the short-term effects of circumlaryngeal massage and laryngeal reposturing on the voice characteristics of transmasculine individuals. The results showed that after the session, the fundamental frequency decreased, the vocal tract length increased, and the voices were perceived as more masculine. However, there was considerable individual variability in the outcomes.

Postnatal remodeling of the laryngeal airway removes body size dependency of spectral features for ultrasonic whistling in laboratory mice

T. Darwaiz et al.

Summary: This study reveals the association between ventral pouch geometry and fundamental frequency (F0) of ultrasonic whistles in mice by analyzing the postnatal shape and size of the laryngeal airway. The allometric growth of the laryngeal airway explains the spectral overlap between young, small mice and older, larger mice.

An atlas of protein turnover rates in mouse tissues

Zach Rolfs et al.

Summary: The study provides a comprehensive resource of protein turnover in mouse tissues and develops a visualization platform for data analysis. Understanding protein turnover is critical for cellular physiology, tissue maintenance, and drug development. The dataset and visualization software will guide future studies on mammalian protein turnover in different physiological and pathological conditions.

Male and female gonadal ageing: its impact on health span and life span

Monica B. Frungieri et al.

Summary: As individuals age, changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis lead to a decline in gonadal function, impacting fertility and quality of life. This decline exacerbates a mutual crosstalk among oxidative stress, apoptosis, and the inflammatory response in the gonads, adversely affecting fertility. Novel therapeutic interventions using antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, and anti-inflammatory drugs have potential clinical implications on health span and life span.
