Evidence of synergistic electrocatalysis at a cobalt oxide-graphene interface through nanochemical mapping of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy

Juan-Jesus Velasco Velez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of graphene membranes as in-situ environmental windows in X-ray (electron) microscopy. Cobalt nanoparticles were grown on the graphene through electrochemical deposition, and the electronic structure and chemical bonding states were examined using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. The results revealed a correlation between the size of the cobalt nanoparticles and oxidation state and carbon bonding configuration. An increase in C-OH formation was observed before the growth of the cobalt nanoparticles.

Nonpolarizing oxygen-redox capacity without O-O dimerization in Na2Mn3O7

Akihisa Tsuchimoto et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the origin of voltage hysteresis in oxygen-redox reactions, particularly exploring the stable O· oxygen atoms identified in the Na2-xMn3O7 material. The results indicate that the presence of O· oxygen atoms and the hole stabilization through a (sigma+) multiorbital Mn-O bond are key factors for its small polarization and large capacity.

Improved Skin Permeability after Topical Treatment with Serine Protease: Probing the Penetration of Rapamycin by Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy

Gregor Germer et al.

Summary: Drug penetration in human skin ex vivo following skin barrier modification was systematically studied using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. Two methods, employing Beer-Lambert law and singular value decomposition, were compared for analyzing drug concentration data. Results showed that rapamycin did not penetrate the stratum corneum of untreated skin, but penetrated more efficiently after pretreatment with serine protease. The drug mainly associated with corneocytes, with less presence in the intercellular lipid compartment.

Deciphering the Oxygen Absorption Pre-edge: A Caveat on its Application for Probing Oxygen Redox Reactions in Batteries

Subhayan Roychoudhury et al.

Summary: This study investigates the O-K pre-edge of 55 oxides covering all 3d TMs in various elements, structures, and electrochemical states, showing that the O-K pre-edge variation in battery cathodes is dominated by changing TM-d states. The results provide a unique way to project the relative energy positions of low-lying TM states and clarify unusual redox reactions. This work offers a critical clarification on O-K pre-edge interpretation and establishes a benchmark database for characterizing redox reactions in batteries and other energy materials.
