Time-constrained multiphase brittle tectonic evolution of the onshore mid-Norwegian passive margin

Giulia Tartaglia et al.

Summary: The mid-Norwegian passive margin is a complex rifted margin with multiple phases of development influenced by the More-Tron-delag fault complex. Through various methods, six tectonic events have been identified, revealing the structural evolution of the margin. This study provides valuable insights into the mid-Norwegian passive margin and contributes to the understanding of fault patterns in fractured passive margins elsewhere.

Pace of passive margin tectonism revealed by U-Pb dating of fracture-filling calcite

William H. Amidon et al.

Summary: A growing body of evidence suggests that Atlantic-style passive margins have experienced uplift and volcanism long after the cessation of rifting, providing valuable geological records. However, the utilization of this archive is currently limited due to difficulties in interpretation.

Increased erosion of high-elevation land during late Cenozoic: evidence from detrital thermochronology off-shore Greenland

Valerio Olivetti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in concentrated erosion and sediment source in high-altitude mountain regions over the past 7 million years, using detrital apatite fission-track dating. The results show that glacial erosion intensifies erosion in valley bottoms and increases sediment contribution from higher elevations. This aging trend provides an unusual case in detrital thermochronology and strong evidence of intensified Quaternary glaciations amplifying the erosional process both in valley bottoms and at high elevations.

From widespread faulting to localised rifting: Evidence from K-Ar fault gouge dates from the Norwegian North Sea rift shoulder

Haakon Fossen et al.

Summary: By conducting K-Ar dating on fault gouge samples from 18 faults along the eastern rift margin in the northern North Sea, evidence of clay gouge formation since the Late Devonian and distinct Permian and Jurassic fault activity peaks were found. The decrease in fault density away from the rift margin confirms a close relationship between rifting and onshore faulting. The results suggest that initial rift-related extension affected a wider area than the resulting offshore rift, supporting a rift model where strain is distributed over a wide region before localizing into the narrower Viking Graben.

Rifting of Collapsed Orogens: Successive Incision of Continental Crust in the Proximal Margin Offshore Norway

Per Terje Osmundsen et al.

Summary: The study reveals the structural evolution of rifted margins near Norway, demonstrating that early rift structures were dominated by the post-Caledonian template and evolved into deeper faults and core complexes in the Late Paleozoic and Earliest Mesozoic. The transition from core complex extension to incising faults occurred before the deposition of Late Triassic-Early Jurassic strata, highlighting significant complexity and extension magnitudes in proximal margins.
