The peat bog at Zinnwald-Georgenfeld revisited after 25 years: Geochemical investigation of water, Sphagnum moss and peat cores

Elke Bozau et al.

Summary: The study investigated the trace metal concentrations in bog water, Sphagnum mosses, and peat cores in the Eastern Ore Mountains of Germany. The results showed no changes in bog waters, while the concentrations of trace metals in Sphagnum mosses significantly decreased. The elemental data of the peat sampled in the 1990s and in 2019 were found to be in the same concentration range, indicating a low growth rate of the peat.

Soils developed on the Si-poor, alkali-rich pyroclastic rocks of the Colli Albani volcanic district (Central Italy): The effect of leucite, clinopyroxene and phlogopite on the base cations mobility

M. Gaeta et al.

Summary: The Colli Albani volcanic district deposits thick pyroclastic-flow materials in the southeastern suburbs of the City of Rome, which contribute to the growth of Ancient Rome. The unique physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the soils in this area have important implications for sustainable soil use. The soil development process includes the evolution from bedrock to Lee-bearing soils and then to Qz-bearing soils, with changes in mineral composition and cation exchange capacity. Understanding these soil properties is crucial for effective soil management.

Understanding the Role of Humic Acids on Crop Performance and Soil Health

Kwame Ampong et al.

Summary: Humic acids (HA) play essential roles in improving soil properties, plant growth, and agronomic parameters. They positively affect soil physical, chemical, and biological characteristics, as well as crop growth, nutrient uptake, and yield. Factors such as HA type, application rate, mode, and soil type influence the effects of HA on soil and crops.

Assessment of physicochemical parameters and metal distribution in bog peat of the western segment of the North European part of Russia (Arkhangelsk region)

Evgeny Yakovlev et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the physicochemical parameters and metal accumulation in peat deposits from the Arkhangelsk region, Russia. The high metal content in peat was mainly attributed to burning of fossil fuels and industrial production. Continuous monitoring of metal content in peatlands from this region is necessary to assess the impact of industrial emissions on atmospheric pollution.

Fostering Sustainable Cities through Resilience Thinking: The Role of Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs): Lessons Learned from Two Italian Case Studies

Marcelo Enrique Conti et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the role of nature-based solutions in promoting sustainable cities from a resilience perspective. Through empirical analysis of two Italian municipalities, the contributions of NBSs to urban sustainability and resilience were studied, and a urban managerial tool called the NBS curve was proposed.

Investigating the Mineral Composition of Peat by Combining FTIR-ATR and Multivariate Analysis

Antonio Martinez Cortizas et al.

Summary: The mineral content of peat was not well studied until recently, when non-destructive techniques like FTIR-ATR became useful in analyzing the mineral composition and understanding the processes behind its compositional changes. This study used FTIR-ATR to identify main minerals in peat and ash fractions, showing potential for investigating peat mineral matter.

An optimized method for sample preparation and elemental analysis of extra-virgin olive oil by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Maria Luisa Astolfi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a fast and simple analytical method to quantify 45 elements in small mass samples of extra virgin olive oils. It was found that using a 5 mL reagent mixture F for sample digestion in a water bath produced satisfactory results, as validated from sample recovery experiments.

Sphagnum moss as a novel growth medium in sustainable indoor agriculture systems

Michelle M. P. McKeon-Bennett et al.

Summary: In response to the impacts of climate change and global population growth on traditional food production, agricultural industries and government agencies are investing time and funding into researching sustainable and carbon-friendly processes. High-yield low-cost technologies like indoor agriculture are shifting the focus from traditional intensification of land use and pesticide-based crop yield promotion. Development of organic growth media to replace single-use materials is a key priority, with alternatives like Sphagnum moss being introduced.
