Prenatal exposure to tailpipe and non-tailpipe tracers of particulate matter pollution and autism spectrum disorders

Md Mostafijur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tailpipe and non-tailpipe emissions of fine particulate matter on the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children. The results showed that both sources of particulate matter were associated with increased risk of ASD, with the non-tailpipe sources of copper, iron, and manganese having a stronger effect. This suggests that reducing tailpipe emissions may not eliminate the association between traffic-related air pollution and ASD.

Long-term exposure to traffic-related air pollution and selected health outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

H. Boogaard et al.

Summary: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) has significant health effects, particularly on children and pregnant women. Long-term exposure to TRAP is associated with respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, lung cancer, asthma, and acute lower respiratory infections in children. It is important to prioritize the reduction of TRAP to improve public health.

The epidemiological evidence linking exposure to ambient particulate matter with neurodevelopmental disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Li-Zi Lin et al.

Summary: This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the associations between ambient particulate matter (PM) and different types of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The findings suggest a potential link between PM2.5 exposure during early-life and an increased risk of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), with the early postnatal period identified as a critical exposure window.

Air pollution and neurological development in children

Sandie Ha

Summary: Pregnancy and early childhood are critical periods for neurological development, with environmental perturbations having long-lasting effects. Exposure to air pollution during these periods can lead to changes in brain structures and developmental disorders, emphasizing the importance of reducing pollution exposure.

Early childhood exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with increased risk of paediatric asthma: An administrative cohort study from Stockholm, Sweden

David Olsson et al.

Summary: This study examined how different exposure windows of various pollutants affect the risk of asthma in early life. It found that exposure to PM2.5, pOC, and SOA in the first three years of life increased the risk of childhood asthma. Additionally, the study showed that the risk associated with PM2.5 and specific components of air pollution was higher in areas with lower socioeconomic status.

The Association between Vitamin D Status and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Zuqun Wang et al.

Summary: The association between vitamin D status and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been well-investigated, with lower vitamin D levels being associated with higher risk of ASD. Moreover, decreased early-life vitamin D concentration in children with ASD and higher likelihood of developing ASD in children with reduced maternal or neonatal vitamin D were observed in prospective studies. This highlights the importance of detecting and intervening in vitamin D deficiency in ASD patients, pregnant, and lactating women for clinical and public health significance.

Summary: This study identified metabolic pathways disturbed in mothers with ASD offspring among women experiencing high exposure to traffic-related air pollution during pregnancy that were associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, providing a better understanding of metabolic disturbances involved in the development of ASD under adverse environmental conditions.

Exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution from solid fuel combustion and respiratory outcomes in children in developed countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Valentina Guercio et al.

Summary: Epidemiological studies found no significant association between indoor wood burning exposure and asthma risk, but a slight increase in the risk of lower respiratory infection (LRI) and upper respiratory infection (URI). Limited evidence on other respiratory outcomes like rhinitis, hay fever, and influenza. Studies on indoor coal burning exposure and respiratory outcomes, as well as exposure to outdoor solid fuels, are too limited to draw firm conclusions.

Early-Life Exposure to Environmental Air Pollution and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Review of Available Evidence

Giovanni Imbriani et al.

Summary: Studies have found a strong association between maternal exposure to particulate matter (PM), especially PM2.5, during pregnancy or in the first years of the children's life, and the risk of developing ASD. Current evidence suggests that pregnancy is the period in which exposure to environmental pollutants seems to be most impactful concerning the onset of ASD in children.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant impact of the fossil fuel component of PM2.5 on global premature mortality. The steeper concentration-response function slope at lower concentrations leads to higher estimates in Europe and North America, while the slower drop-off in slope at higher concentrations results in higher estimates in Asia.

Ambient PM2.5 species and ultrafine particle exposure and their differential metabolomic signatures

Feiby L. Nassan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the relative contribution of different species of PM2.5 exposure to perturbed metabolic pathways. Results showed that specific PM2.5 species were associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, immunity, and nucleic acid damage and repair in plasma metabolites. These findings highlight the importance of considering specific sources of PM2.5 exposure in understanding its impact on metabolic pathways.
