Remote sensing of the decant pond of tailings dams: Insights from a South African case study

C. O'Donovan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of tailings dam decant ponds. The results suggest that Sentinel-2 data can be used to supplement the monitoring of decant ponds, and there is good agreement between the measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery.

Tailings facility disclosures reveal stability risks

Daniel M. Franks et al.

Summary: Tailings facility failures pose significant risks to the environment and communities globally, with an active upstream facility showing a higher incidence of stability issues compared to other facility types. In-pit/natural landform and dry-stack facilities exhibit lower incidence of stability issues, stressing the universal importance of careful facility management and governance.

Watch Out for the Tailings Pond, a Sharp Edge Hanging over Our Heads: Lessons Learned and Perceptions from the Brumadinho Tailings Dam Failure Disaster

Deqiang Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catastrophic tailings dam failure in Brumadinho, Brazil, using satellite images to analyze the causes and consequences of the disaster. It highlighted the lack of dam stability management and extreme precipitation as the main triggering factors. Additionally, it emphasized the need for strengthening regular drainage inspection, risk assessment, monitoring, and early warning systems in Consecutive Hot Spot areas to mitigate future disasters.
