Increased n-6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids Indicate Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Lipid Modifications in Synovial Membranes with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Anne-Mari Mustonen et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that fatty acids and their derivatives can have both beneficial and detrimental effects on inflammatory processes and joint degradation in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This study characterized the specific fatty acid signatures in synovial membranes of OA and RA patients, and identified differences in fatty acid composition that could potentially predict inflammatory states.

Role of arachidonic acid lipoxygenase pathway in Asthma

Yacan Luo et al.

Summary: The arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism pathways, particularly those involving lipoxygenases (LOXs) in cell membranes, have been found to play a significant role in inflammatory diseases like asthma. Drugs targeting AA LOXs pathway may have beneficial effects in the treatment of asthma.

Summary: This study found that during the proliferation of fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs), there were changes in the proportions of fatty acids (FAs), which could potentially affect membrane fluidity, synthesis of lipid mediators, and inflammatory processes in joints.

Isolation of Extracellular Vesicles From the Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid of Healthy and Asthmatic Horses

Nina Hoglund et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the number and size distribution of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of asthmatic horses and healthy horses. By using size-exclusion chromatography and nanoparticle tracking analysis, EVs were successfully isolated and characterized. The results showed that equine BALF contains EVs of various sizes, providing a foundation for studying the role of EVs in horses with airway inflammation.

Lipidomic analysis of surfactant and plasma from horses with asthma and age-matched healthy horses

Undine Christmann et al.

Summary: This study conducted lipidomic analysis of surfactant and plasma samples from asthmatic and healthy horses. The surfactant of severe equine asthma (SEA) horses showed deficits and alterations in phospholipids. Mild equine asthma with neutrophilic airway inflammation (MEA-N) horses only showed slight variations, while mild equine asthma with eosinophilic airway inflammation (MEA-E) horses had increased levels of select ceramides and dihydrocermides. The plasma lipidomic profile of all asthma groups differed significantly from that of the control group. Only SEA horses had significantly increased levels of serum surfactant protein D (SP-D).

Dynamics of DHA and EPA supplementation: incorporation into equine plasma, synovial fluid, and surfactant glycerophosphocholines

Undine Christmann et al.

Summary: The study involved dietary supplementation of DHA+EPA in horses, leading to increased storage pools of omega-3 essential fatty acids in the body, which has the potential to enhance the ability of anti-inflammatory mechanisms to resolve inflammatory pathways in critical compartments related to arthritis and asthma.
