The cap epitranscriptome: Early directions to a complex life as mRNA

Ina Anreiter et al.

Summary: Animal, protist, and viral mRNAs are modified at the beginning by cap-adjacent nucleotide methylation, which affects gene expression including synaptic localization and local translation. The sequence diversity at transcription start sites, together with cap-adjacent nucleotide methylation and internal methylation, may provide a novel layer of gene expression control. This code could be involved in lasting memories through local gene expression at synapses.

The evolution of sex peptide: sexual conflict, cooperation, and coevolution

Ben R. Hopkins et al.

Summary: Sexual conflict is a central paradigm in evolutionary biology. This article focuses on the seminal protein 'sex peptide' (SP) in Drosophila and challenges the widespread view that SP harms females while benefiting males. The authors argue that the existing view is oversimplified, narrow, and not supported by empirical evidence. They propose a more expanded view that SP has evolved to benefit females rather than harm them based on a comprehensive review of research findings.

Channel nuclear pore protein 54 directs sexual differentiation and neuronal wiring of female reproductive behaviors in Drosophila

Mohanakarthik P. Nallasivan et al.

Summary: The study identified the nuclear pore protein Nup54 gene as crucial for the sex peptide response in female Drosophila, influencing neuronal wiring and sexual differentiation. Mutations in Nup54 resulted in the inability to lay eggs and reduced receptivity after exposure to sex peptide, highlighting its role in regulating post-mating behaviors. This suggests a link between nuclear pore functionality and the neuronal responses to male-derived sex peptide, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms of sexual conflict in fruit flies.

Molecular and evolutionary processes generating variation in gene expression

Mark S. Hill et al.

Summary: Heritable variation in gene expression arises from mutations filtered by natural selection. High-throughput methods reveal regulatory variation generation mechanisms and compare mutational effects with wild variation to understand neutral and non-neutral evolutionary processes. Integrating molecular and evolutionary biology helps predict the evolution of gene expression variations.

Channel nuclear pore complex subunits are required for transposon silencing in Drosophila

Marzia Munafo et al.

Summary: The nuclear pore complex (NPC) functions as a gateway between the nucleus and cytoplasm for exchange of macromolecular cargo. Specific nucleoporins within the NPC, such as Nup54 and Nup58, have essential roles in transposon silencing via the piRNA pathway in the Drosophila ovary, suggesting tissue-specific functions for certain NPC subunits. This study demonstrates that genomic loci under selective pressure can exploit NPC subunits to facilitate their expression, indicating additional functions beyond nuclear/cytoplasmic exchange for the NPC.

Nonadaptive molecular evolution of seminal fluid proteins in Drosophila

Bahar Patlar et al.

Summary: The study found that approximately 50-57% of seminal fluid protein genes in fruit flies are undergoing relaxed selection, while only 7-12% show evidence of positive selection. 35-37% of SFP genes are selectively constrained.

Hakai is required for stabilization of core components of the m6A mRNA methylation machinery

Praveen Bawankar et al.

Summary: The E3 ligase Hakai is a conserved component of the m(6)A methyltransferase complex in Drosophila and human cells. Depletion of Hakai results in reduced m(6)A levels and altered functions, affecting sex determination in Drosophila.
