Microplastic pollution of commercial fishes from coastal and offshore waters in southwestern Japan

Mitsuharu Yagi et al.

Summary: This study provides baseline data on microplastic pollution in commercially important fishes from the coastal and offshore waters near Kyushu, Japan. The findings show that pelagic fish have higher levels of microplastic contamination compared to demersal fish, and the contamination is influenced by habitat depth, type, and fish species.

Difference in polypropylene fragmentation mechanism between marine and terrestrial regions

Hisayuk Nakatani et al.

Summary: The study found that delamination behavior depends on the oxidation state of the material, and the fluctuations in carbonyl index and weight change ratio are caused by repeated oxidation and delamination. This indicates that delamination is based on environmental stress cracking.

Spatiotemporal variations of surface water microplastics near Kyushu, Japan: A quali-quantitative analysis

Tsunefumi Kobayashi et al.

Summary: The study revealed spatial and temporal variations in microplastics near Kyushu, Japan, with significant differences in abundance and size. White and transparent polyethylene fragments were found to be the dominant composition, and there were significant differences in microplastic parameters among the survey months.

Photo aging of polypropylene microplastics in estuary water and coastal seawater: Important role of chlorine ion

Xiaowei Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that the aging rate of polypropylene microplastics (PP MPs) is significantly reduced in estuary water and seawater compared to ultrapure water, leading to longer resistance time in marine environment. Additionally, an inhibitory effect on the aging process of PP MPs in seawater was found with increased Cl- concentration, due to the formation of Cl-2(center dot-) which reacts with HO2(center dot) and prevents the formation of O-2(center dot-). This study highlights the impact of water matrices on the photo aging rate of MPs in natural water.
