Circulation Patterns Linked to the Positive Sub-Tropical Indian Ocean Dipole

Chibuike Chiedozie Ibebuchi

Summary: This paper examines the circulation types of summer rain-bearing in Africa south of the equator that are related to the positive phase of the subtropical Indian Ocean dipole (SIOD). It explores the dynamics through which specific rainfall regions in southern Africa can be influenced by this relationship.

Atmospheric circulation patterns that trigger heavy rainfall in West Africa

Jan Bliefernicht et al.

Summary: A new two-step classification procedure is proposed for downscaling rainfall in the West Africa region. The approach utilizes a classification of large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns and meso-scale monsoon patterns to better describe rainfall variability during the West African Monsoon. The method accurately distinguishes between dry and wet weather patterns and identifies the most important patterns for daily heavy rainfall in the area.

The interplay of thermodynamics and ocean dynamics during ENSO growth phase

Tobias Bayr et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the contribution of thermodynamic feedbacks to SST changes during the growth phase of ENSO, emphasizing the importance of ocean dynamics and thermodynamics. Most CMIP5 climate models underestimate the SST changes due to both ocean dynamics and net surface heat fluxes, with some models showing an erroneous amplifying shortwave-SST feedback in ENSO dynamics. The study also highlights the significance of dynamic and thermodynamic ENSO feedbacks in improving the representation of ENSO in climate models.

Leading patterns of the satellite-era summer precipitation over West Africa and associated global teleconnections

Hyacinth C. Nnamchi et al.

Summary: Analysis of precipitation patterns over West Africa from July to September during the satellite era from 1983 to 2017 revealed two dominant modes, with the Sahel mode showing increasing precipitation and the Guinea Coast mode displaying robust but not statistically significant trends. The Sahel mode is associated with a northerly displacement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone and warm Atlantic Ocean conditions, while the Guinea Coast mode is linked to strong interannual variability and interactions between meridional and zonal atmospheric circulations.
