Establishing a governance threshold in small-scale fisheries to achieve sustainability

Alba Aguion et al.

Summary: To achieve sustainability in small-scale fisheries, it is crucial to enhance the implementation of nested spatial scales of management, access structure, co-management, and fisher's participation in monitoring and surveillance. The key lies not in the presence of these elements, but in their level of implementation, in driving sustainability.

Stock assessment and management of cephalopods: advances and challenges for short-lived fishery resources

Alexander Arkhipkin et al.

Summary: Cephalopods have unique life history characteristics that make traditional age-based modelling impractical, therefore innovative depletion models are proposed for realistic stock biomass estimates. A fast lane assessment approach is suggested for in-season stock assessments of each cohort to ensure sustainable exploitation. Most cephalopod fisheries are data-poor, so alternative assessment methods have been presented along with suggestions for further research.

Fisheries for common octopus in Europe: socioeconomic importance and management

Cristina Pita et al.

Summary: The EU is a major market for cephalopods globally, and small-scale artisanal common octopus fisheries in Southern Europe are socially and economically important, with varying management measures and industry participation levels. This study focuses on Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Greece, comparing their current fisheries status, socio-economic importance, management arrangements, and future prospects, highlighting the lack of detailed data collection on the socioeconomic aspects of octopus fisheries in Europe.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.

Evidence of stock connectivity, hybridization, and misidentification in white anglerfish supports the need of a genetics-informed fisheries management framework

Imanol Aguirre-Sarabia et al.

Summary: Genetics can help understand population connectivity of white anglerfish and its interaction with black anglerfish. The study found that white anglerfish is likely a single panmictic population, some specimens classified as white anglerfish are genetically identified as black anglerfish, and the two Lophius species naturally hybridize. The results set the basis for a genetics-informed white anglerfish assessment framework.

Estimation of the spawning stock and recruitment relationship of Octopus vulgaris in Asturias (Bay of Biscay) with generalized depletion models: implications for the applicability of MSY

Ruben H. Roa-Ureta et al.

Summary: A new generalized depletion model was developed for the rapid life cycle of Octopus vulgaris in a co-managed small-scale fishery in northwest Spain. The study found high density-dependence in the fishery stock, leading to overcompensation and making the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) inapplicable. It is suggested that harvest rates based on mean latent productivity are more appropriate and sustainable for fluctuating stocks.
