Plant Secondary Metabolites as Defense Tools against Herbivores for Sustainable Crop Protection

Pratap Adinath Divekar et al.

Summary: Plants have evolved adaptive strategies to defend against herbivores by synthesizing plant secondary metabolites (PSMs). PSMs play important roles in detecting and responding to herbivore attacks, and have limited adaptability to insects. They cause direct toxicity to pests and indirectly protect plants by attracting herbivore natural enemies. Understanding the molecular regulation of PSM biosynthesis can contribute to improving plant tolerance to herbivores.

Insecticidal activity of the essential oil of Schinus areira against Rhipibruchus picturatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Bruchinae), and its inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase

Valeria Tapia Mattar et al.

Summary: During the storage of Prosopis alba pods, significant losses were observed due to the seed beetle Rhipibruchus picturatus. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of Schinus areira and Citrus spp. essential oils (EOs) against R. picturatus. The results showed that the EOs obtained from S. areira leaves exhibited the best insecticidal activity, inhibiting the acetylcholinesterase enzyme. These findings suggest the potential use of Schinus areira EOs in developing new storage pest control strategies.

Life Table Parameters and Digestive Enzyme Activity of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on Selected Legume Cultivars

Seyed Ali Hemmati et al.

Summary: The Spodoptera littoralis larvae showed different life table parameters and digestive enzyme activities on different legume cultivars. The common bean Arabi had the highest intrinsic rate of increase (r), while the cowpea Mashhad had the lowest. The highest net reproductive rate (R-0) was found in insects reared on Arabi. The proteolytic activities of larvae were highest on Mashhad and lowest on Arabi, while the amylolytic activity was highest on Arabi and 1057 cultivars and lowest on Yaghout and Mashhad. The developmental time of S. littoralis larvae was negatively correlated with protein content and positively correlated with starch content in legumes. Arabi was found to be a susceptible cultivar, while Mashhad exhibited tolerance traits against S. littoralis.
