Combined basin-scale and decentralized flood risk assessment: a methodological approach for preliminary flood risk assessment

Summary: This study focused on a combined basin-scale and decentralized approach to riverine flood risk mapping and assessment in the Gidra River Basin (Slovakia). The methodology used a spatial and probabilistic relation between the physical processes of riverine flooding and vulnerability. Design peak discharges were calculated using a rainfall generation model and rainfall-runoff model, and flood scenarios were used for hydraulic modeling. The results showed that municipalities in the northern-central part of the area had the highest flood risk index values.

A smart sustainable system for flood damage management with the application of artificial intelligence and multi-criteria decision-making computations

Summary: Decision Support System (DSS) is used to manage man-made and natural phenomena, such as flood disasters, and achieve Sustainable Development Goals. The study designs different stages of a novel DSS system for monitoring, predicting, and controlling floods, using machine learning computations and multi-criteria decision-making techniques. The integration of artificial intelligence and Ward computations helps analyze heterogeneous rainfall data in different provinces of Iran, and prioritize strategies for early decision-making in flood disasters through Pre-FA, DFA, and Post-FA activities.

The study methodology includes the selection of the study area, identification of factors responsible for flood, and generation of thematic layers for the flood risk map. Flood risk index development at the municipal level in Costa Rica: A methodological framework

Summary: This study analyzes and classifies the flood risk of 82 municipalities in Costa Rica, and designs a flood risk index to understand the role of different variables at a local level. The results show that municipalities located in flatlands, Pacific and Caribbean basins, as well as borderlands and coastal regions have higher flood risk. This approach can promote flood risk assessment plans in developing countries or regions with limited information.

Riverine flood potential assessment at municipal level in Slovakia

Summary: This study maps and assesses the riverine flood potential in municipalities of Slovakia using the vector-based spatial multi-criteria analysis and geographic information systems (GIS). The results show that the northern and eastern municipalities have higher flood potential, while the western and southern ones have lower flood potential. The proposed methodology can be useful for regular updating of Preliminary Flood Risk Assessment (PFRA) in Slovakia under the EU Floods Directive.

Generation of a Flood Susceptibility Map of Evenly Weighted Conditioning Factors for Hungary

Summary: This study aims to upgrade the national flash flood susceptibility map of Hungary by constructing flash flood susceptibility maps at different levels. The results indicate that more than half of the settlements are located in areas with high susceptibility. Among the different classification methods, the majority-based method shows the highest accuracy.

Flood exposure and social vulnerability in the United States

Summary: This study explores the geography of flood exposure and social vulnerability in the conterminous United States, identifying hotspots where high flood exposure and high social vulnerability converge. The results show that these hotspots are predominantly located in rural areas and across the US South, with a population of approximately 19 million. Interventions in these hotspots can mitigate both physical and social aspects of flood vulnerability.

Predicting Future Urban Flood Risk Using Land Change and Hydraulic Modeling in a River Watershed in the Central Province of Vietnam

Summary: The study aims to explore future urban flood risk by combining land use change and hydraulic models, aiming to reduce risk under different vulnerability and exposure scenarios. Despite the increase in flood risk due to urbanization, population density, and the number of hospitals in the floodplain, particularly in the coastal region, the area exposed to high and very high risks decreases due to a reduction in poverty rate.

Effects of Different Normalization, Aggregation, and Classification Methods on the Construction of Flood Vulnerability Indexes

Summary: The study compared the effects of different normalization, aggregation, and classification methods on a flood vulnerability index model. The results showed low sensitivity in the normalization step, while the geometric aggregation method resulted in significant differences and tended to underestimate vulnerability. The natural breaks method was deemed most suitable for classification based on the AIC performance.

Analyzing the spatiotemporal dynamics of flood risk and its driving factors in a coastal watershed of southeastern China

Summary: This study developed a spatial multi-criteria analysis framework to assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of flood risk in a coastal watershed of southeastern China from 1990 to 2015. The highest risk stage was identified as 2006-2010, while the lowest risk stage was 2011-2015. The top driving factors for flood risk included peak discharge, maximum daily rainfall, age structure, wetland, and reservoir, with risk perception showing a continuous growing impact. The results and conclusions are significant for policymakers to develop more targeted and spatially-specific flood adaptation strategies in the context of climate change and rapid urbanization.

Application of entropy weighting method for urban flood hazard mapping

Summary: Flooding is a common natural hazard globally, and assessing flood hazard through various indices is essential. In this study, six flood-related indices were used to produce an urban flood hazard map in Hamadan city, showing different susceptibility levels. The accuracy evaluation of the map using two methods demonstrated consistent results, with a 72% accuracy rate suggesting acceptability.

Summary: This study evaluated different flood risk reduction alternatives in seven cadastral areas of the Upper Myjava and Teplica river basins using multi-criteria analyses methods. It was found that in most cases, A3 was the best alternative. The alternatives with the highest social cost had the greatest social impact, while there were some shortcomings in the methods used by watercourse managers to select the most suitable alternative.
