Exercise type influences the effect of an acute bout of exercise on hippocampal neuronal activation in mice

Ryuki Tsuchida et al.

Summary: The effects of exercise on the hippocampus are influenced by exercise conditions, with exercise intensity being a dominant factor. This study found that treadmill exercise at a moderate intensity more efficiently activates hippocampal neurons compared to intensity-matched rotarod exercise. Therefore, exercise type is another important factor affecting the effects of exercise on the hippocampus.

From Obesity to Hippocampal Neurodegeneration: Pathogenesis and Non-Pharmacological Interventions

Thomas Ho-yin Lee et al.

Summary: A high-caloric diet and lack of physical activity can lead to obesity and diabetes, increasing the risk of hippocampal neurodegeneration and cognitive deficits. Caloric restriction and physical exercise are crucial non-pharmacological interventions to prevent the development of hippocampal neurodegeneration in obese and diabetic individuals, while exercise-induced exerkines from peripheral organs have beneficial effects on brain health. This review highlights how chronic inflammation in adipose tissue may contribute to neuroinflammation and hippocampal impairment, potentially leading to cognitive deficits in obese and diabetic conditions.

Elevated Lactate by High-Intensity Interval Training Regulates the Hippocampal BDNF Expression and the Mitochondrial Quality Control System

Jingyun Hu et al.

Summary: HIIT has been reported to benefit brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) biosynthesis, possibly due to the presence of lactate. The study found that HIIT can enhance mitochondrial function and stimulate BDNF expression by regulating the mitochondrial quality control system.

L-lactate exerts a pro-proliferative effect on adult hippocampal precursor cells in vitro

Alexandra Poetzsch et al.

Summary: The study showed that L-lactate has a pro-proliferative effect on neural precursor cells, which is dependent on the active lactate transport by monocarboxylate transporters and is not linked to amplified mitochondrial respiration. L-lactate redirected glucose metabolism to the pentose phosphate pathway, as indicated by increased glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and decreased glycolysis.

Acute Administration of Exogenous Lactate Increases Carbohydrate Metabolism during Exercise in Mice

Inkwon Jang et al.

Summary: The study found that administration of exogenous lactate before exercise can enhance carbohydrate oxidation levels during exercise while decreasing blood glucose levels and glycogen content in muscles and liver. Additionally, the expression levels of factors related to carbohydrate oxidation and oxidative metabolism were different between the lactate intake group and the control group.
