Beam-steering capability for OAM-based reflectarray at 5G-mmWave frequencies

Ali Ali et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the ability of the reflectarray antenna (RA) to steer orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams with low divergence angles at the 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. Smooth regulation of scatterer geometries is necessary to achieve steered OAM beams with the required twisted distribution. The traditional numerical method is modified to enable 3D scanning of OAM beams, avoiding feeder blockage and producing high-gain steered OAM beams. Additionally, reducing the inherent beam divergence can be achieved by examining the most satisfactory phase distribution of the scatterers based on fitting the focal length. The simulated radiation pattern is validated using measurements of a fabricated RA in the frequency range of 28.5 to 31.5 GHz.

Reflective Metasurface With Steered OAM Beams for THz Communications

Ali Ali et al.

Summary: A reflective metasurface (RMTS) is used to enhance the coverage of high gain terahertz (THz) OAM beams by reshaping the incident wavefront into a helical wavefront, redirecting it towards the desired direction. This can alleviate the concern of small aperture size, as it improves channel capacity in the low spectrum blocks of the THz band (larger aperture size). Validation is done through simulation, fabrication, and testing of three 90 x 90 mm RMTSs in the frequency range of 90-110 GHz, redirecting single and dual OAM beams to desired locations.

Transmissive Digital Coding Metasurfaces for Polarization- Dependent Dual-Mode Quad Orbital Angular Momentum Beams

Sijia Li et al.

Summary: In wireless communication systems, multibeam and multimode techniques are used to increase spatial channels and enhance channel capacity. However, previous methods could not achieve independent controls of orbital angular momentum (OAM) states in both space division and mode division multiplexing simultaneously. This study demonstrates a multilayer transmissive digital coding metasurface with a single emitting source for quadOAM beam generation with dual mode. This scheme provides a simple way to multiplexing, multichannel, and multiplatform communication and imaging systems.

Digital coding transmissive metasurface for multi-OAM-beam

Si Jia Li et al.

Summary: This article proposes a method to generate multi-OAM beams using a digital coding transmissive metasurface. By encoding the geometric phase into the rotation angle of the unit cell, a 3-bit phase response can be achieved. Additionally, phase compensation is introduced to focus the beam and convert it from a spherical wave to a plane wave. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the performance of the method.

Metasurface-based THz reflectarray antenna with vortex multiplexing and beam-steering capabilities for future wireless communications

Ali Ali et al.

Summary: This article investigates the unexplored potentials of vortices or orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams using the low-cost and high-gain dielectric reflectarray antennas (RAs) at the terahertz band. It proposes a paradigm to enable 3D beam-steering or OAM multiplexing by a single structure via tilted OAM beams. The proposed paradigm can be utilized to produce RAs with beam-steering or OAM multiplexing capabilities as candidates for THz indoor communications.
