New perspectives on randomized controlled trials with omega-3 fatty acid supplements and cognition: A scoping review

B. Andriambeloa et al.

Summary: This study summarized 78 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and found inconsistent results regarding the relationship between n-3 FA intake and cognitive risk reduction. The RCTs included diverse populations, wide range of doses, and various cognitive assessment methods. However, among adults with mild cognitive impairments (MCI), 66.7% of RCTs reported improvement in cognitive function after n-3 FA supplementation.

Fish, n-3 fatty acids, cognition and dementia risk: not just a fishy tale

Rasha N. M. Saleh et al.

Summary: With the increase in population and aging, the incidence of dementia is expected to significantly rise globally. In the absence of effective drugs, dietary approaches, specifically a high intake of fish and long chain n-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), have been shown to have a positive effect on cognitive outcomes and dementia risk. However, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on EPA and DHA supplementation have produced mixed results. The impact of APOE genotype on disease risk and response to EPA and DHA supplementation is also discussed.

Investigating the Effects of a Multinutrient Supplement on Cognition, Mood and Biochemical Markers in Middle-Aged Adults with 'Optimal' and 'Sub-Optimal' Diets: A Randomized Double Blind Placebo Controlled Trial

Lauren M. M. Young et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of a multinutrient formula on memory, attention, mood, and nutrient status in middle-aged adults. The results showed that the formula was associated with increased B vitamin status, but did not significantly improve memory and attention in the whole cohort. Interestingly, there was a beneficial effect of supplementation on attentional performance in individuals with an 'optimal' diet prior to supplementation.

Trends in Overall and Micronutrient-Containing Dietary Supplement Use in US Adults and Children, NHANES 2007-2018

Alexandra E. Cowan et al.

Summary: This study examined the use of dietary supplements (DS) in the US population from 2007-2018 using multiple assessment methods. The results showed an increase in the prevalence of DS use as well as micronutrient-containing DS use over time. The use of single-nutrient DS increased, while the use of multivitamin-mineral DS decreased. Different population subgroups showed variations in DS use.

Exploring the sex and gender correlates of cognitive sex differences

Sarah Kheloui et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the factors influencing cognitive abilities, showing that men outperformed women in mental rotation tasks while no significant difference was found in verbal fluency tasks. Additionally, sex hormones may have a positive impact on cognitive performance in women, and gender roles may have an interactive effect on cognitive abilities.

Supplementation with oil rich in eicosapentaenoic acid, but not in docosahexaenoic acid, improves global cognitive function in healthy, young adults: results from randomized controlled trials

Michael J. Patan et al.

Summary: This study found that oil rich in EPA can improve cognitive performance and memory accuracy, and outperformed oil enriched with DHA. Additionally, n-3 PUFAs may be associated with increased cognitive efficiency.
