Impairment of neuronal mitochondrial function by l-DOPA in the absence of oxygen-dependent auto-oxidation and oxidative cell damage

Philipp Hoermann et al.

Summary: l-DOPA, the most commonly used drug for treating symptoms of Parkinson's disease, can be enzymatically converted to dopamine to restore depleted neurotransmitter levels. Research has shown that oxygen tensions comparable to those in the mammalian brain can significantly inhibit l-DOPA auto-oxidation and even enhance its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species. This study further revealed that l-DOPA reprograms mitochondrial metabolism, reducing oxidative phosphorylation and inducing reductive glutamine metabolism, shedding new light on its cellular effects and neuro-toxicity under physiological oxygen levels.

Summary: The study found that low serum levels of Vitamin B-12 were independently associated with degenerative rotator cuff tears. Further research is needed to determine if Vitamin B-12 supplementation can reduce the risk of this condition.

Global Trends in the Incidence, Prevalence, and Years Lived With Disability of Parkinson's Disease in 204 Countries/Territories From 1990 to 2019

Zejin Ou et al.

Summary: The incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) of Parkinson's disease (PD) have shown increasing trends globally from 1990 to 2019. Most regions and countries have observed an upward trend in the burden of PD, particularly in relation to the aging population.

Effects of vitamin B12, folate, and entacapone on homocysteine levels in levodopa-treated Parkinson's disease patients: A randomized controlled study

Chumpol Anamnart et al.

Summary: In this study, levodopa-treated Parkinson's disease patients had higher plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels compared to levodopa-naive patients. Supplementation with vitamin B12 and folate significantly reduced Hcy levels, while entacapone showed only mild effects and was not statistically significant. Monitoring of Hcy levels and supplementation with inexpensive vitamin B12 and folate is recommended for levodopa-treated patients.

Elevated homocysteine levels in patients with heart failure A systematic review and meta-analysis

Nake Jin et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review to examine the association between elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels and heart failure (HF). The results confirmed that HF patients had significantly higher Hcy levels compared to control subjects, with a positive relationship to the advancement of New York Heart Association (NYHA) class. Subgroup analyses also supported these findings.
