Dietary Antioxidants, Quality of Nutrition and Cardiovascular Characteristics among Omnivores, Flexitarians and Vegetarians in Poland-The Results of Multicenter National Representative Survey WOBASZ

Magdalena Kwasniewska et al.

Summary: Several reports reveal that plant-based diets provide higher antioxidant intake compared to meat-rich diets. However, data on dietary patterns and cardiovascular disease prevention in Central and Eastern Europe are limited. This study aimed to assess nutrition quality and cardiovascular characteristics in Polish adults following different diets. The results showed that neither flexitarians nor vegetarians had better dietary habits compared to omnivores, and omnivores had higher intake of natural antioxidants. The study suggests the need for guidance on balanced nutrition for Polish adults.

Summary: This study investigated the association between plant-based diet indices and bone mineral density (BMD) in Iranian women. The findings suggest that a healthy plant-based diet can prevent bone loss, while an unhealthy plant-based diet may have detrimental effects on BMD.

Bowel Health in US Vegetarians: A 4-Year Data Report from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)

Maximilian Andreas Storz et al.

Summary: Dietary fiber is important for preventing large-bowel diseases, but fiber intake in many high income countries is below recommendations. Vegetarians, who consume fiber-rich plant foods, have higher bowel movement frequency and softer stools. However, there is limited research on these associations. This study investigated bowel health and constipation prevalence in a self-identified vegetarian population. The lack of association between vegetarian status and bowel health was surprising and may be due to low fiber intake in this particular vegetarian group.

Prevalence and Trends in Low Bone Density, Osteopenia and Osteoporosis in US Adults With Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, 2005-2014

Tianyu Zhai et al.

Summary: This study found that US adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) had a trend towards lower bone mineral density (BMD) and a higher prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis at the femoral neck from 2005-2014. NAFLD with advanced fibrosis was also associated with a higher risk of spine fractures. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms and consequences of poor bone health in NAFLD patients and develop optimal management strategies for osteopenia/osteoporosis in this population.

Summary: The study found significant differences in acid-base profiles between vegans and omnivores, with vegans exhibiting a pronounced alkaline excess and omnivores having a relatively low acid load. However, within the spectrum of alkaline to low acid load, no association with bone health was found.

Systemic immune-inflammation index and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women: A cross-sectional study of the national health and nutrition examination survey (NHANES) 2007-2018

Yuchen Tang et al.

Summary: This study explores the association between systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. The results suggest that higher SII is associated with lower BMD and increased risk of osteoporosis. Other inflammatory markers, such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the product of platelet count and neutrophil count (PPN), are also negatively associated with BMD and positively associated with the risk of osteoporosis. These associations are more significant in postmenopausal women aged >=65 years or with normal BMI.

Plant-based dietary patterns in relation to mortality among older adults in China

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between plant-based dietary patterns and mortality and found that overall and healthful plant-based dietary patterns can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, while unhealthy plant-based dietary patterns can increase the risk. Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, legumes, garlic, nuts, and tea were identified as the main protective contributors, while preserved vegetables and sugar were associated with a higher risk of mortality.

Racial and gender differences in the relationship between sarcopenia and bone mineral density among older adults

H. -T. Ning et al.

Summary: The study found that there are racial and gender differences in the relationship between sarcopenia and BMD among older adults. Sarcopenic individuals are more likely to have lower BMD, with the strongest association found in non-Hispanic Black people, followed by non-Hispanic White people and non-Hispanic Asian people. Adjustments for physiological, behavioral, and disease factors were made, and it was concluded that consideration in race and sex is important when developing strategies to maintain or minimize BMD loss.

Summary: Using national representative data, this study found differences in the prevalence of low bone mineral density and associated risk factors among different race and ethnic groups. Advanced age, female gender, and fracture history were consistently associated with increased odds of low BMD across all race/ethnic groups, while other factors varied by race/ethnicity. The association between sleep duration and low BMD was modified by age and sex.
